600 lbs. woman survives getting thrown through sunroof

Town N Country, Florida – A woman is in stable condition after being ejected through the sunroof of her SUV during an accident.

Thirty-seven-year-old Ruth Matthews told paramedics that another vehicle cut her off in traffic, and she took evasive action to avoid a crash. Her Isuzu Amigo rolled over and she was thrown through the sunroof and onto the roadway. Investigators say she was not wearing her seatbelt.

Paramedics initially tried to fly Matthews to Tampa General Hospital, but her weight, estimated at 600 pounds, made it impossible. Emergency crews were able to transport her to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

Authorities are continuing their investigation.

The Isuzu must have a generously sized sunroof.

Ejected through the sunroof might be the wrong term.
Poured through.

The mental imagery tied to this story is at once highly entertaining and deeply disturbing.

a freaking go-cart would have rolled with 600 pounds up that high.

That brought the center of gravity WAY up past where the engineers figured it.

Nope, the 4WD Isuzu Amigo's are (were) built with rigid axles front and rear, and were well known for rolling. Unless she was driving from the roof, the vehicle is rated for about 1,000 pounds passenger weight total.

Okay, sorry about the buzzkill.
Maybe she had her lunch strapped to the roof, all 1200 pounds worth!

IMHO, someone of that girth cannot actually strap ON a seat belt.

cbelt... seat belt....

the elevator at work is rated for 3700 pounds, anyone want to get in it if you think there may be 3300 pounds of flesh in there? too close for me.

its not the amigos that rolled over -- its the troopers which were the rollover kings

maybe she flew out the back, the amigos came in a "ragtop" version -- troopers did have HUGE sunroofs, but it says 'amigo'

I can verify that someone 400 or more pounds probably can not get the belt around their body. If it would fit, there is no way they could put it on by themselves. Actually, a lot of people significantly smaller are unable to buckle themselves, due to their girth. kj.

There are other factors beside weight.
Height to weight ratio. Was she 4'10", or 6'6"? There was a Samoan Queen who was way over 6'.
Musculature. Muscle weighs twice as much as fat.

Total, as in spread among the four/five seats and cargo area.

I repeat: the vehicle's dynamic state was at the edge of anything the engineers even considered.

I'm not sure what your point is. Are you saying she may have been over 6ft. and 600lbs. of muscle? I suppose it's possible... Either way, she ain't gonna be using a seatbelt. I know an obese guy that is over 6ft., and over 400lbs., and he can't fit in the driver seat of a Kia Rio. Period. Seatbelt? kj.

Being female, 600lbs likely contained very little muscle mass.

*IF* she was wearing a seatbelt, she very likely would *not* have been ejected.

And if the Amigo's were prone to rolling, 600lbs in the driver's seat couldn't help the stability.

Tell me about it. I was on the wrestling team in HS with a few samoan dudes. I just rolled over and played dead, so I wouldn't end up dead. Think Jimmy Snuka but a lot heavier....They all tried to emulate him.
