iPhone upgrades and switching numbers?

So here is the situation. I have an iPhone 4 and am not due for an upgrade till next summer. My girlfriend has a nokia phone and can upgrade to an iPhone next month. We are on a family plan together with both phones on the same account. She does not want to pay to upgrade her phone but would be glad to take my iPhone 4 if I got a new 4S. So can we upgrade her phone for a 4s and switch my number to the new 4s and give my old iPhone 4 to her and port the number from her old nokia to it? We are on ATT if that matters.

if she's already then i think she'd just need a new sim card. should be quick and easy.

I have done something similar with Verizon (although not involving data plans). They didn't blink an eye, and were able to do the switch in about 20 minutes.

good luck,

Just make sure you do it through a corporate-owned AT&T store, and be prepared to deal with the results if they mess it up somehow.

My only complaint against AT&T is that they messed up my number transfer on the release of the 4. It was a complicated situation, but after many assurances that it would work, they gave me a lot of run around until I finally just gave up. Fortunately, keeping my # just wasn't that important to me.

Part of the problem is that there is a serious distinction between a corporate-owned store and an authorized dealer that just LOOKS like a corporate-owned store. Didn't know that then, but I do now.

It is called a cross upgrade in AT&T parlance. Fairly common and easy to do. You can even do it at an Apple store as it happens all the time there, they have extra SIM cards for such occasions and the specialists should know the sequence (Upgrade her line to the new phone, activate phone, get a replacement SIM, call AT&T and have them swap the SIM cards in their system, and finally swap the SIM cards between the phones).
