dreamhost.com

arvixe.com

bluehost.com

other _________

Any needs I have would be limited to a few personal sites, or tiny small business sites with low traffic/bandwidth. I have my own domains and am not currently interested in blogging sites or other places that host for free but make you use their templates/domains and so on.

I'm not a dreamhost customer, but quite frankly, I was scared away from ever considering them for anything critical years ago when they were consistently having major outages. They may be just fine now, though.

I have been with hostgator.com for almost 10 years now on various sites/clients. They have been a superb performer for the money.

When i was looking to try someone new a couple of years ago (just so I had an alternative to hostgator if I ever needed one--you know the "all your eggs in one basket" thing?), I came across a2hosting.com and have my personal site and several client sites with them. They aren't a huge host like hostgator, but I have been very impressed with their performance and level of support that I've consistently received from them. If you want to go with them, let me know via PM, and I'll send you a referral link to sign up. (the Dreamhost folks could probably do the same, so at least someone is benefitting from your signup).

I agree with Clay.

"dreamhost is down" used to be a running joke on more than one forum I visit.

that said, Im not sure any one is "better" than the others. They all offer nearly the same features for almost the same monthly amount. You are splitting hairs.

I think bluehost is probably the most popular.

Exactly. B/c other affordable hosts never have any downtime.

This is kind of like how people won't buy Hitachi hard drives now b/c didn't they make those "deathstars"???

I agree that all hosts will have downtime from time to time. But what got me about dreamhost was the way that they seemed to handle it...it was always a major crisis that they were totally unprepared for and seemed to take longer than it should have to fix. To me, that speaks volumes about the way they ran (run?) their business. Maybe they've "grown up", but in the low-cost hosting realm, there are enough other options that I'm not going to try out anything critical on a company with a so-so history.

DH has had two major outages. One thing I really like about them is their honesty. They put everything on their blog and if they screw up, they say so directly.

Thanks graylocks, I'd forgotten about A Small Orange, and they're a local company, too.

Dreamhost did have a bad couple years. That was a few years ago. I've had them since 1997. For the past couple years I've had uptime monitoring on a few sites I host with them. Extremely solid. I get notified if there's more than 5min of downtime.

On a side note, if you do go with dreamhost ping someone here who's a customer and see if they'll send you a referral code.

I second ASO. I had their smallest plan for several years, and have recently upgraded one level. I've not had any significant outages of which I'm aware...and I do watch my stats daily. Support response was good the two times or so I needed them. I have a stable of a half-dozen small sites, the biggest gets maybe 300 unique visitors a day.
