Anybody using T-Mobile $30 Monthly Plan w/ iPhone?
Posted by: p8712

So, I've got a nice iPhone 2g that works great and am thinking of getting tmobile's new 100 mins/Unlimited Text/ Unlimited Data monthly 4g plan that runs $30/month. Is anybody else using this plan? Its absolutely perfect for my needs and I can't really beat the price. They're really vague about taxes and fees. I know prepaid customers aren't charged them, but I'm not sure if they apply to this type of account. I'm also looking to port my current number to it.

Any general experiences or comments would really help. Thanks!

"Unlimited Data monthly 4g"

It'll work @ 2g speeds on an iPhone, which meets my needs perfectly. I could care less about 3/4g speeds.

Again, I know this, I don't care.

Monthly4g is the name of the plan.

Where do you see that plan? If it's on the T-Mobile website, I can't seem to find it.

It should work fine. In fact, when I was calling TMo to tell them I was leaving b/c I wanted an iPhone, the CSR said that many people use the prepaid plans with iPhones, but you just don't get the 4g/3g speed (which you don't care about anyway).

I think iMessage and MMS may also not work properly, at least not without some tweaking.

I still ditched TMo and went to ATT, but I switched my wife and mom over to the TMo prepaid plans (we had a 3 line family plan on the postpaid side).

My wife is on the $50 plan which actually costs $55.13 and my mom is on the other $30 plan (1500 combined voice minutes/texts) which actually costs $33.08.

Hope this helps.

Same here. I don't see that plan on TMobile site. Is it a prepaid plan?

Thanks for the info pinkoos. I'm running whited00r, so all the Tmo fixes are already done, and there's no imessage to worry about, since it's ios3.

Do you know where the extra fees come from? They're likely state/local taxes, but I just want to be sure I'm pretty close to $30 per month.

My daughter used to be on TMobile prepaid. If you buy the PINs for refill from CallingMart, there are no taxes and fees, and they often have discount codes, if you sign up for their emails or follow them on Twitter.

Once you are signed up for the plan, all you have to make sure of is that you have the $30 in your account each month for it to refill, so you can buy the PINs anywhere you want and apply them online at MyT-Mobile or on your phone. At least that is the way it worked for the $50 unlimited plan my daughter was on.

With the CallingMart discounts, I usually wound up paying 5%-10% less per month. I think the discount codes are now usually only 5%, but there are also no taxes and fees, so $30 nets down to $28.50 total.

I was in Wal-Mart today looking at the Wal-Mart mobile phone plan, which is $45 for one phone and $25 for each additional line (up to 5 total) with unlimited talk and text, and refill cards for data at $0.05/MB.

The flyer about the service said something like a $0.98 "regulatory cost recovery charge" (not the exact wording) and taxes and fees of something like 2% to 12%, which I assume depends on the locality. The service is provided by T-Mobile, so I assume those additional fees would be the same on the $30 plan you reference.

Good luck.

Although WalMart's plan is a no contract plan, I don't think it is prepaid, and so there would be taxes and fees. I believe the new TMobile plan is prepaid, so if you buy your own PINs online from a retailer, not TMobile, I don't think there would be the taxes and fees.

Yes, plus walmart is just reselling tmobile's service. I'd rather go right to the horse's mouth and still get prepaid service

And, Walmart is evil, so best to avoid them altogether. grinning smiley

This plan works great.

It must be activated on a new line (can't switch from another prepaid plan) so you'll need a new SIM and activation code (forget Walmart, activate online)

$30/month, no taxes or fees, slight discount if you buy the cards online from a 3rd party (doesn't need a special card)

Once activated, for about $50 online you can pick up a Zoom USB stick (model 4597 - supports T-Mobile's 3G frequency), pop in the SIM, and have 3G access on your Mac or Windows computer.

Not sure how to port in a number...

Anyone know if there are any problems using this with Skype?

If you have unlimited data and Skype, seems to me 100 min voice on T-Mobile would not be a significant limit. Might need to watch it and restart some calls on Skype if you are a big voice user.

I'd consider switching if my Nokia flip phone could do Skype. But we do have an old unused iPhone 3g . . .

The limit on "new activations only" is really stupid. If I transfer to T-Mobile, I'd move my son to my place on our family AT&T account. They'd have a shot at keeping both of us without that restriction. (He's currently on T-Mobile prepaid with a voice only account.)

Good luck.

I use GrooveIP on my 'Droid to get around the 100 minute limit ($0.10 each addl minute)

GrooveIP uses your Google Voice number...is it or something similar available for the iPhone?
