Speaker system for iMac?

A family member will buy me a set of speakers for my new iMac for X-mas. I assume we're not talking a set of $500 speaks but probably something decent. Are there any suggestions?

I had the set of dual kipslh <?> with the woofer at one time a staffer at Max PC gave me, but I also have a teenager and they went the way of the ghost about two years ago.

All depends what you want to do with the computer. If you are interested in music or watching youtube Then a good set of stereo speakers is for you. If you are a gamer, consider surround sound.

AudioEngine makes a great pair of stereo speakers.

I've got the A2 set for work. Much smaller, and not as much bass punch at lower volumes. However, the sound quality is just amazing. The A5s will have a more significant bass punch due to their size. The workmanship is also fantastic. When I move and get a better room for my office, I'm getting the A5s. If you are really a bass guy, a subwoofer is also sold separately.

Others have liked the Klipsh 2.1 system.

2.1 systems can be annoying to position---it does matter where you place the sub. The Audio Engines are an easy recommendation if you don't have or don't want to get a separate amplifier. Good sound, simple setup and work well for near field listening or across the room.

JBL Creatures, I still have the originals and they still sound great. Mine weren't but $15 at a yard sale.
The little speakers will fit underneath my iMac, put the subwoofer almost anywhere.

I fooled around with 2.1 systems, but couldn't find one I liked. The bass was boomy and the mids thin-sounding. I heard the Bose Companion 2 Series II at our Apple Store and bought a pair on ebay. No regrets.

$115 M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 was a fairly popular alternate to the Audioengine. This is a small comparison from January 2011. Tom's Hardware Premium Two-Channel PC Speaker Roundup

Edit: Hmm, the Amazon reviews of the AV 40 sound like they might have changed the manufacturing from the original version. Take the review with a grain of salt.

I have a set of the 4.1 kipslh that I'm using as 2.1 and I am very happy with them.
