ya ya ya, whatever, here goes.

2011 Denali
White Diamond
Sun roof
Entertainment and destination package
rear seat entertainment
cd/dvd, usb, navigation

$60,820 MSRP

They are offering it to me for $57,262 and % apr for 72mo
or
$53,262 if I want to buy it outright

Is that a good price? I don't know anything about researching car values.

The buy it outright seems like an OK deal for a 2012.

Kind of weak on a 2011, unless they are really hard to find or something.

More money than I paid for a 1200 sq ft house in 1996. House was built in 1958. Nice place.

I think I suffered sticker shock for you. No way could I imagine paying $50K+ for a vehicle.

No way I could imagine paying that much for an SUV. Really, I was shocked when I saw how much it was. We are about to buy, well lease actually, a new 2012 Ford Focus and the purchase price is about a third of that. Don't get me wrong, I used to really be into cars and we have had our share of expensive cars, but I had no idea that a Denali was anywhere near that much.

No.

To put it in perspective, we bought a conversion van, well, almost 15 years ago. It was last year's model. We paid 2/3 list price for it.

I'd look into comparative prices elsewhere. There may be a 'luxury' cachet for this vehicle, and it all depends on how desperate the dealer is to dump the inventory before the end of the year taxes (if they apply).

Good luck !

You can get the price lower. Keep negotiating.

I hear tell that right before Christmas auto dealers have a heck of a hard time selling vehicles. Everyone is thinking about the holiday and getting their Christmas shopping done rather than buying a new ride.

we are talking about a yukon denali, not an acadia denali, right?

have you tired to deal on a denali hybrid? I have read that they are a tough sell.

the only problem I have with the yukon/tahoe/escalade platform is that its really long in the tooth. the denali is essentially unchanged from 2006. I just rode in my buddies brand new tahoe -- interior touches -- like the giant shifter, bolted on arm rests, and the "just slapped it in stereo" etc really scream 1990 to me. overall, it was a nice ride, but i just wasnt that impressed.

I think I've lost the thread.
The question was whether to spend this on a car or something else, right?

Until the entire line of Jeep vehicles earns a reputation for lasting 200,000 miles, anybody that pays $60,000 for one, deserves what they get.

Unless I had enough money to just write a check, there's no way I would spend that much money on a car.

Back to the original topic,

2011 Denali AWD 6.2L V8 403 HP - Invoice: $52,680

You should be able to get one for at least $1000 under invoice if your dealer has a couple still on the lot after Christmas. Two days before the end of the year used to be a great time for deals. That said, the invoice can be a fake number. There are a few buying sites that will give you an incredible amount of detail on how well they are selling, what it costs the dealer, and what they are selling for around your Zip Code. Edit: They usually charge $20 or so but the good ones are really worth it. Look for reviews of buying sites, maybe someone here has used one?

Don't let them play four square with you after they think they have you hooked. Be willing to walk for a better deal.

That just seems incredibly expensive for a relatively unsophisticated piece of detroit iron. It's a GMC truck fer chrissakes! How much leather and how many LCD screens can you jam into such a vehicle to drive the price to such insane levels?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I never wanted to do it and I made it known tonight. Not sure when I will see my wife again but for the moment the checkbook is safe. I will wait for the 09 to become available at work.

Lazy,

Can't speak for the price but can offer you three pieces of advice..

1. Get your financing set before you walk in the door. That way, you don't have to worry about financing during negotiations.

2. Don't factor in the trade-in until _after_ you've agreed to a price.

3. Find and have a fair price for the vehicle before walking into the dealer. That price is your magic number.

4. After you've found the magic number, use the "I will pay <magic number> dollars for the vehicle. Take it or leave it" method that I've detailed in other posts. If they aren't willing to give you the vehicle for that amount of money, walk away. The car market is always a buyer's market and you should never settle when it comes to price. There are other Denalis and other vehicles and other dealers and if one doesn't bite, then you haven't lost anything except a little bit of time.

Robert

these days in my neighborhood you could buy my house (3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath) and the house next door (4 bedroom 2 bath) for that much money and have a bit left over for new appliances...
