work: Are you best at in-person/phone/email/Messaging for communication?

It's a swiss army knife of communication out there nowadays. And with many businesses embracing chat/messaging, I often wonder if it's the best means. It's very intrusive and it can break up the moment/concentration.But, when it's your boss....

But you do get that little extra moment to choose words, reference a web page/file/etc. before responding.

Which medium are you at your best, and most productive?

A lot depends on the personality of the recipient. Many clients I'd rather deal with on the phone, but there are a couple with whom I'd much rather correspond via email.

It also depends on what is being discussed. If you're trying to coordinate a schedule for a meeting or whatever, you'll save a lot of keystrokes by just picking up the phone with your respective calendars in front of you. On the other hand, if I'm asked to provide a quote, I want a paper trail of what's discussed and I want some time to mull it over and come up with the right number based on those written specifics.

Not work wise, but in general it depends.

If I'm trying to explain an idea it's much easier if I'm at least talking to the person or come in person.

If it's a complicated issue, E-Mail, because it gives you time to research and get your facts straight.

Otherwise, Instant Messaging, which is good because it's instant but they can't hear your tone or see your face, which you've had a bad day and are in a bad mood, they can't tell that(in most cases.).

Just because it has two clutches, shifts faster, uses a torque converter or has near-infinite gear ratios, requires less driver intervention and is more efficient doesn't make it better in my opinion.

I just called a guy in Seattle and got some interest in a machine. Then I followed up with photos via e-mail. He probably won't buy because of sticker shock and the fact it is in Florida and would cost $5000 freight. It always worth a try though.

Used to travel and do the eye to eye but it too expensive now for gas and motels. I got burned out too being on the road all the time.

Personally I find a note tied to a rock that is thrown through the window to be an effective form of communication. It has a strong initial impact and I find it leaves a lasting impression.

Mind you, it's not bad for my window repair business as well!

email for information, personal for emotion. I prefer email, because then I have a memory of what I wrote. (I've got a semi-defective memory from dropping a 215 lb man on my head a few years back).
