Favorite/Best Debut Albums Ever?
Posted by: pinkoos

Almost done listening to "The Clash" straight through (not for the first time, of course...just hadn't listened to it for awhile). One helluva debut album.

What are other debut albums you consider "best" or "favorite?"

Try to refrain from googling "best debut albums ever" as that would bias your opinion.

Just think of some off the top of your head.

A few others I thought of:

Pearl Jam "Ten"
"Led Zeppelin"
"The Who Sing My Generation"

I don't think that Led Zeppelin found their own voice until the second album.

A lot of first albums are an artist's best though.

Patti Smith - Horses

Pretenders - Pretenders

You have good taste. I am going to continue to puzzle over this. Zep I is at the top; I didn't know of the Who's debut album.

I am not sure about how consistent The Clash is as an album, certainly a great debut though. But for that period, X's Los Angeles and Gang of Four's Entertainment! are better debuts.

REM's Murmur
Smashing Pumpkin's Gish
NWA's Straight Otta Compton
Sonic Youth's Goo (is that the debut?)
Radiohead's Pablo Honey (not sure on that one)
The New Pornographer's Mass Romantic

struggling to think of any of the recent stuff that has blown me away.

Jane's Addiction

either XXX (indie) or Nothing's Shocking (WB) can be considered their debut

both are great in their own ways

"John Prine" - John Prine.

"Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1" - I'm not sure if this counts, since it was also their only good album.

Elvis Costello "My Aim is True". But there are so many great first albums like R.E.M. and Dire Straits to name a couple more.

And probably dozens others, if I had the time to think about it.

I was going to say Wall of Voodoo's "Call of the West" but it turns out that it isn't their debut album. Thought for certain it was.

If that's the case, then, I'll go with The Blues Brothers' "Briefcase Full of Blues".

Thanks for the reminder; got to add Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill".

My personal theory is that many bands, and especially those of lesser talent, only have one really good album in them, and it's their first one.

They've arrive with a new sound. They do an ablum of that sound. And they've got nothing beyond that. Subsequent album(s) just more of the same, now repeated stuff.

I don't listen to them much these days, but "Crosby, Stills & Nash" was more than a great debut album, it was a game changer.

Awesome thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like the Stones debut, "The Rolling Stones" was mentioned by anybody.

According to Wikipedia, it was #1 for 12 weeks in 1964. I guess because it's almost all cover songs it can't really be considered a true "debut."

What do you guys think?

I think that the Stones first good album was the American release of Out of Our Heads. This was the album that had Satisfaction, Last Time, and Play with Fire on it. Prior to that album, it sounds like they were just experimenting, and trying to find their own sound.
