Accepting online payments

Asking on behalf of someone who wants to have a way for people to buy his book through his web site (which is built and maintained by someone other than himself). 've already suggested that he talk to his web guy and get suggestions.

Does anyone here have an experience with online payment services such as Kagi or companies that handle merchant accounts?

Paypal would be a possibility, I guess, or Verisign, now owned by PayPal, but I'm not sure I want to recommend anything run by Paypal.

My life goes smoothly and in regular intervals

Unfortunately, Paypal is the best option. . .other online services have run into trouble.

There was one that was gaining in popularity YowCow I think it was. was great in the beginning, then slowly trouble creeped in. . .really bad stuff.

Stick with known companies. ..

There are two main ways to do this:
1. Get an SSL cert, merchant account and gateway
2. Use a third-party processor that has all of #1 (eg, PayPal)

<generalization>The first one is better for high volume sales, and the second one is better for lower volume stuff.</generalization>
