Worst of all... I believe it was stolen by the neighbor kid who my wife adores!

First of all, its kind of a "family" iPod touch... Second of all... It never leaves the house... Third of all, "Find My iPhone" can't seem to locate it but all of a sudden it says "located 10 minutes ago". So, I remote lock it down with a passcode... And now it locates it again but it seems farther away from my house (across the street).

DO NOT want to accuse the neighbor of "borrowing" the iPod... But, I'm pretty suspicious because they were all using it Thursday and no one could find it yesterday. I'm about ready to move my router extender to the living room (closer to the neighbors house)... Ping it... Then nock on the door.

Any suggestions? Never had this happen before and don't want to ruin the relationship with the family. But, as of right now... No one is allowed in the house!

I 100% hope I'm wrong... Still looking around the house! However, sounds are not being played (when it does get located). And both times it actually located the map no longer shows the iPod in our house but more in the street... It moved farther away from our house when it located it the second time.

Guess I will calm down... And just go over there and talk to her grandma or her mom (whoever is there). Explain what we suspect (without accusing) and ask them to have a talk with her to "make sure" she didn't forget that she had it.

And as of Thursday... She was the last visitor here (since Monday... she was the only visitor).

Just talk to your neighbors. Tell them what you know and go from there. You're not accusing anyone, you are gathering info.

Or turn it around and ask them if your child left his iPod at their house as it's remote locator seems to show it there. No accusation, no drama but the kid knows it was traced (likely to scare a 10-yr-old to death) and if the adults realize your child wasn't there, they will figure out what happened without you putting forth any accusations.

hal... I'm silly about this yes... Wife is friends with them so I asked her to go over there and have a talk with her. Wife was gone when I got the e-mail and sitting here waiting for her to get home!

Just walk over there and claim your kid took it with and must have forgotten it there. Then you can keep your suspicions to yourself (and confirmations thereof should the iPod actually be there.)

I'd also doubt her parents are going to let her keep an iPod that just magically showed up... assuming she's making up some story about how your sons gave it to her or something. Just don't be angry and placing blame - kids do stupid things sometimes with respect to stealing their friends' stuff.

Looks like others here are slightly quicker than I am to come up with the no fault approach, and I'm betting your wife can cover for this better than you can.

Good idea... The grandma and mom WILL KNOW that my son wasn't there because they are never over there. But, at least it looks like we are trying to no accuse her of anything.

See.. plausible denial. Friendly neighbor approach. Because their kid would probably claim that she 'had permission'. Once it's found, then a quiet parent to parent conversation about how it actually came to be in your house, and you'll know to keep an eye on the sticky fingered kid.

My car iPod Photo was stolen by a kid a couple streets over. His parents caught him with it, and turned it AND their kid into the cops. ('problem kid'.. they were shooting for a 'scared straight' approach).

I STILL haven't gotten it back from the cops, and it's been four years.

Similar situation, you have to go to the court system and get them to send or give you a release and then go to the police department to get it back. If it was a minor, you might have to go to the juvenile court for a release. They won't give it to you but will forward to Mentor (?) police department. Hope they didn't sell it for being unclaimed. A lot of work for you to do when they have all the info but just don't follow through on cases.
Protect the criminal at the expense of the victim.

"She" being the perp, or her mother?
If the parents were involved in the interaction, they know what's what.

Any sign that the parent picked up on what really happened or is the kid going to learn that she can get away with theft? (at least until she tries it in a store)

I understand your wish to remain friends with the neighbors, but there is still an issue that needs to be resolved. The girl stole the iPod and lied about it, and this kind of behavior should be discouraged. Now that it's clear what happened, you or your wife need to discuss it with the neighbor.

I'm not sure how you should go about that, but surely it is not a good thing if the girl comes to believe that she can "get away" with this kind of behavior.

If the girl continues to steal your things, you can be sure that your relationship with the neighbor will suffer for it.

Edit: After rereading I am now confused. Who did the lying? The girl or her mother? If it was the mother who lied, then your relationship with the neighbor is already destined for trouble.

She = The 10 year old who stole the iPod... Grandma was watching the kids so there is no way grandma would know what's what. However, I told the wife she need to have a talk with Grandma and probably her mom... Explain what happened (we thought we lost it because it's lost once or twice a week).... Explain to her that we have it setup so we can "find it"... But, couldn't find it... Then today the software located the iPod but wasn't ringing.

What confuses me even more is that she just got one for Christmas...

Maybe hers is lost or not working and she was hoping to replace it before mom found out.

Kids do stupid things, they make bad decisions. It is an adult's role to insure that children learn from these mistakes and do not repeat them. Unfortunately too often adults ignore the mistakes thereby reinforcing them or overreact and forget that children learn from their mistakes.

This girl made a mistake - it is a learning opportunity, take advantage of it.
