Or turn it around and ask them if your child left his iPod at their house as it's remote locator seems to show it there. No accusation, no drama but the kid knows it was traced (likely to scare a 10-yr-old to death) and if the adults realize your child wasn't there, they will figure out what happened without you putting forth any accusations.

Wife went over there... Told her that our son said he put it in a coat pocket and if she would please look one more time.
Low and behold the iPod appeared.
She lied that she just found it because the case was removed and the wife needed to go back and get it.
