[DIY] What do you think of my new "desk shelves"?
Posted by: M A V I C
Date: April 21, 2012 03:46PM
Still rebuilding part of my house. Almost done, I am just getting ready to bring stuff back in. Took down the old shelving. Wanted something that used the space better and preferably somewhat covered. I have a few desks that we don't need the space underneath so I decided to put some shelving underneath one.

Previously I had a rubbermaid (or similar) rolling thing with drawers. Didn't look all that grand, didn't fill the space well. So I used some leftover fence wood from the new accent wall, and built some shelves.

What do you think? Crappy camera phone, but you get the idea. The bottom shelf has just enough room for more of those metal bins like you see on the left. And underneath I should be able to sneak my UPS's.

Edit: and the middle shelf height is fully adjustable, should I change my mind on what goes where. Plus it's rather easy to add a shelf, or replace one.

It it serves your needs, ok, but aesthetically, meh.

How about a cheapo shelf that will match either your desk or wall?

Heh, to me, aesthetically the walmart stuff is über meh. Plus space is a premium, there's no room for something like that.

Keep in mind the colors are off in the picture because the camera phone sucks.

I'm a fan of DIY and anything made with real wood. I like it MAVIC, nice work!

can you post a pic of that room, at least of that wooden wall, to get an idea on how it fits into the decor?

I think I would have gone either all wood or all glass.

What holds the front of the glass top up, is it the brackets holding the k+m tray?

A nice mix of modern and rustic. Bonus points for building it yourself. Very nice!

When I'm done. It's really hard to take even average pictures of that room. The wall on the left is solid wood. It's not going to look like a pottery barn catalog, partially because we don't do stuff like that and also because we were on a budget (insurance money for repairs.) For example, I used fence wood because it cost $40 for the entire wall, as opposed to $600+ for some of the other options.

Don't have the $$ for glass, plus that's a whole different material to work with.

The glass top sits on two crossbars, and there's three rubber standoffs on each cross bar. The k/m tray is attached underneath those bars. The shelves hook around those bars, and are fully suspended.

Like it - especially the threaded rod suspension. Is there enough knee space ?

Well, I like to reuse building materials too. The desk w/shelves works for me, and from what I can see of the wall, it looks great. Good job.

Thanks. I only set stuff on that desk, I don't sit at it. It's to the right of where I will be sitting. Although I'm totally going through my setup, in the past my switch, phone, voip adapter, notepad, pens/pencils and the occasional laptop (connected via KVM) have sat on that desk. But my legs don't go under it.

Thanks. For the wall, I create a light well up top that shines down on the wall and my desks (but doesn't shine into my face.) We'll be putting a lot of pictures and artwork in frames on that wall over time.

This picture makes the wall look like crap, the colors are really MUCH better than this but my phone (and even my D90) have a very hard time capturing it because of the lighting. It's mostly darker cedar, except as you go past desk level it lightens up.

I'm not a huge fan of the desks. I like that they're glass and metal, but don't love the color nor the shape of the top bars (being oval means I can't put anything across them.) But they're what I've got, and bought at a super good deal ~9 years ago.

Heh! Those glass and metal pieces were once a corner desk, am I right? I have a corner desk that has those same exact pieces, right down to the sliding keyboard shelf.

Looks good to me, and I always get an extra boost by salvaging something instead of throwing it away. thumbs up

Mr. Lahey: Why don't you get a life Rick? Why don't ya go to community college like Julian here. Hey, I got a good idea. You could teach, livin' in a car and growin' dope 101.

Ricky: Hehe. And you can teach how to get drunk, get fired from the police force, become a... lousy trailer park supervisor that sucks, hangs around with a @#$%&' idiot that doesn't wear a shirt, and looks like a dick but thinks he looks good... 101.

I still have the corners too. Two sets. Just not quite enough room to use them with my wife in the same room now.

I think that wall looks peachy. Almost like exposed brick but not.

I like the wood shelves, and the cedar accent wall is really a neat idea. The glass tabletop would look more appealing if it were sandblasted or chemically etched, which would also conceal stuff under it.

I do like your creative use of wood, though I'm not a fan of cedar.

I like your use of at hand materials, as others have said. If you had some tubing you could cover the threaded rod as well.

I REALLY like the look of that wall, as said above, like exposed brick. But I think the metal and glass clash with the wood shelves. Is there anyway to remove the glass and replace it with wood?

By the way, is the long board in the center of every even numbered row from the top "bowed" out. If so, is it supposed too?

I guess I just don't like the desk itself, but agree that the wood wall and shelves are attractive.
