I mailed my tax return extension, but USPS says...

printed paypal first class label, left it in my mail box on April 16th, postman took it same day.

Now tracking number says "Electronic Shipping Info Received"

I don't have any proof that the thing was actually mailed. I will probably file my taxes soon (2 weeks) and I expect some refund. Should I do anything, send another extension?

USPS probably delivered it but they didn't scan it. It happened to a priority mail package a few month ago, it was delivered after about 10 days but USPS never scanned it.

USPS tracking is crude at best. It's probably fine. I would not worry about it.

i always do it online. in fact, i believe one year you could do an extension on an IRS automated phone line.

PayPal labels for any class other than Express Mail includes confirmation of delivery. It is not tracking. See the Domestic Mail Manual for details. Hope your mailing actually qualified for DC, if it was a first class letter or flat it did not. If you needed an acceptance scan when using epostage, the only way to guarantee one would have been to use the SCAN form (form 3152)

When using PayPal shipping, I do the following things to protect against potential future issues.

1) I save the mailing label as a pdf file so that I can always print a duplicate to prove postmark date.

2) I take the items to the post office to get an acceptance scan indicating actual mailing date.

If the IRS owes YOU money, they are unlikely to harass you about mailing date. Penalties/interest are only assessed if you owe THEM money. Then mailing date will affect when the clock starts ticking.

If the IRS owes YOU money, the most important deadline is 3 years after the initial due date (eg 4/15/15 for tax year 2011). After that 3-year mark, you can't reclaim the overage and the FEDs get to keep it.
