Rain & Thunder in Chicago in January
Posted by: JPK

I think our office is about the only one in the world open today. I am missing football today especially my Iowa Hawkeyes. The white Christmas has melted away.

It is raining and there is loud and close thunder. I didn't think it could thunder at this time of the year?

We get winter thunderstorms occasionally in Baltimore. In Chicago it's a little odd, I agree.

100 miles south of Chicago and we are under a tornado watch this a.m.

Sub zero last week and about 58° right now.

We had snow flurries and thunder a couple weeks ago - strange

I think dmann is rooting for her Hawkeyes too from chi-town too !

Glad I don't live in California.

Our nightly lows are above the normal highs and frequently have been for a couple of weeks but we still have 6 inches of snow none-the-less. No global warming here. St. Cloud MN.

JPK and 'fil (my Boilermaker friend)- a friend and I were going to try and catch the game at Goodbar with the Chicago area alumni group but our plans fell through. Given the current score, I'm happy to watch them get their butts kicked from the comfort of my couch!

Yup, was at my cousin's funeral this AM, southwest of Chicago (Plainfield), and as it seems to always happen, everybody got to the graveside, and within 2 minutes, thunder, lightning, and a torrential downpour. That stopped within a minute of the service being done. Couldn't have scripted it better if it were a movie. :>)

Good Luck!

I was camping in the thunder and rain (New Years tradition). Sat under the tarp talking until the rain stopped then it was a beautiful day.

We get snowstorms with thunder and lightning quite often here in SE Mass. in the winter.

There's still a temperature differential between cloud top temps and surface temps, even in the winter.
Heat is a catalyst, but not necessarily a prerquisite for thunder and lightning.

Definitely strange weather.

Kind of makes me think of when you take a cold glass out of the freezer and put a cold beer into it. You can stick it on the oven but you'll still get some condesation freezing around the sides... At least for a little while.
