Comments on the LinkSys WRT54GC 'Compact' router?

Advertised at Office Depot for $20, (Internet special price).

I'm wondering how this model stacks up to the less-compact regular WRT54G.

Any ideas why not to get this one? Seems very capable.

From your link.:
"This item can't be bought online."

That makes it NOT an internet special, you have to go into the store.

Haven't tested it, but Linksys has been good to me.
And if I didn't have three spare wireless routers, I would go and buy one.

Just did some research.
I would buy this thing just for the WAP function, it is cheaper than game adapters, offers better protection, four port switch, full router function.

Now I gotta go to OD!
Called some of my customers, they want it.
Might buy a couple of spares for myself.
Heck, this thing even has a SMA connector for an optional high-gain antenna!

Its a bit more expensive but the WRT54GL is an excellent value. You do need to do some tinkering but I have been extremely pleased with it. Tons of features for the money. Yay for open source firmware.

I have this router, but be aware– it does not support AppleTalk

I've had one since they first came out. (Paid $40 through Amazon.com.) It has worked great the whole time. My recently added G3 iBook with Airport card connects to it anywhere in my house and even in my garage (1 1/2 floors down.)

cool, what I meant by "internet special price" was just what you said, however confusing that may seem. Not available to buy online, but the price is advertised online only. I think.

Did you have to print out the web page price to get that $20 deal in the store?

I know what you meant, I meant no harm.
Nope, Nancy at OD knew the price when I called her.
Sweet little device, barely 3.86"X3.86"X1", I already carry a ViewSonic wireless router but it only has a single enet port, I started carrying around a switch because of setups I was doing in the hotels I was staying at. This combines both, and is only a half inch bigger than the ViewSonic alone, and one less wall wart.

OK well my local OD is out of stock, told me to check back tomorrow, they expect more by Saturday (or at least before the end of the sale).

They lie mikebw. Take the website printout to Staples and get it pricematched. Along with some empty ink cartridges. 3 Max.

I have a printout, I'll try Staples tomorrow if OD doesn't get any in.

EDIT: nevermind my previous post
