Who are your top five online vendors for Mac and idevice related gear?

Hi everyone,

First and foremost, I want to thank OWC for offering a great selection of gear, top-notch support and fair and reasonable prices. Definitely one of my top vendors for Mac gear. But, I’ll admit, I have a few other vendors that I support as well.

Here are my top five: (not in any particular order)

1. Other World Computing

2. Newegg.com

3. Expercom.com

4. Staples, OfficeMax and similar stores - I’m grouping them together because they’re pretty much the same to me.

5. Amazon.com

I do purchase from a few other shops on occasion such as Megamacs.com [www.megamacs.com] (usually for older flavors of software), Apple itself via the Apple online store or the local Apple Store and monoprice.com (for cables) but, for the most part, the five listed above are my primary vendors.

As crazy as it sounds, that top five list wasn’t that easy to put together. It took some thinking about what I've bought in the last year or two and from whom I purchased it. For Macs, I usually go to Expercom.com. For hard disk drives and enclosures, OWC or Newegg. For software and general “stuff” related to my mac and idevices, Amazon.com. For printers and consummables, Staples, OfficeMax and similar stores (Lots o’ savings via coupons and rebates).

Who are your top five online vendors for Mac and idevice related gear?

Robert

Edited to account for monoprice.com. I buy _lots_ of cables from them! THanks for the reminder Graylocks!

I just meant that their name never crosses my mind when I am looking for Mac stuff online. Kind of similar to Smalldog, their prices aren't great, and their selection is kind of limited. I've never seen anything at either of those places that wasn't cheaper at one of the other places I mentioned. Not that they are bad places to shop, or don't have amazing customer service, I personally just don't see the value. If they were local to me I would probably shop there though.

C(-)ris,

Interesting. For Macs, Expercom.com charges the same prices as Apple and other places. The difference for me is usually free shipping and no sales tax. Free shipping is common at many places but they often charge sales tax. For a small purchase, it's not much of an issue. For a new Mac, it can be a significant amount.

Amazon
OWC
Apple
Data Memory Systems
outlets of the major Mac online vendors such as CDW, MacMall....

That is approximately the order in which I have spent money the last year, Apple goes higher on the list in years I replace my Mac's.

C(h)ris, etc., thanks for the explanation about Expercom - right, you do have to consider sales tax, shipping, etc. to get total price.

I only buy refurbs so the only place to get those is straight from Apple. Otherwise, I buy used. New isn't worth the price premium when the refurbished machines look identical and have the same warranty.

C(-)ris,

Makes sense in that respect. One thing to be leery of with refurbs. If you want to get an extended warranty, you must buy Applecare. Most other extended warranties exclude refurbs. Funny, though, at one point, I remember buying Apple factory refurbs from Smalldog and Expercom. Definitely from Smalldog. Maybe Apple doesn't allow that anymore and sells refurbs direct only now.

No real # 5. I guess anywhere that has a good deal. Deal Mac has pointed me to some good deals over the years.

Yes, Apple stopped auctioning off part of the supply of factory refurbished Mac's and i-devices years ago, at least 5 or 6. So Smalldog, Expercom, and other outlets no longer have access to them the way they once did. Smalldog does still sell demo, used and store refurbished units, but not enough for me to shop regularly with them these days. Apple is pretty much the only source for factory refurbs of their product. Occasionally some are sold off from models older than the previous generation, but those are not ones I look for.
