substitute for iPhoto

Since iPhoto so buggy which other FREE application we can use in its place? This is for my brother's 400MHz Pismo running 10.4.3 with 320 Ram and 40 Gig hd. He just wants to learn how to do light photo manipulations of his immediate family esp. now that he's a brand spanking new first time daddy :-) TiA

to be honest, I do light photo work of my growing family, and never have problems with iPhoto. The only thing I can see is that his computer is a little under powered-- my 733 G4 with 1 GB ram feels slow.

never a problem w/ iPhoto here....perhaps it's just slow on this machine? I don't know of a 3rd party app...

You NEED more RAM . . . 384 in NOT ENOUGH for Tiger and iPhoto to feel the love . . . you need to help them co-habitate better... grinning smiley

Here's all he needs and they're free.

QuickImage CM

PhotoTool CM

I use them both all the time with 10.3.9 and they're free.

The occasional times that I myself use iPhoto it has been positive experiences. However, my friend, a new Mac user, has nothing but nightmarish experiences, i.e. her daughter's graduation pictures are forever lost, [forums.macresource.com]. So I don't want that to happen with my brother.

Regarding RAM upgrade, we are looking into it right now.

Which version of iPhoto? The earliest couple of versions are ridiculously slow and not particularly useful. From version 4 on it's pretty snappy and the iLife 2005 version has a ton of useful tools.

Helloooo!! It doesn't matter what photo software you use, any database is susceptible to corruption (or user error) that can result in loss of data. Also, your hard drive WILL fail at some point. Hard drives only have a finite lifetime. You MUST backup your data (preferably to a media you can take offsite). It is the only way to protect against such things.

By the time she told me of her situation, my suggestion to back up the photo was too late. Live and learn I suppose.

iPhoto runs just fine with my pismo. Not sure why/what is buggy for you.

My previous post, forums.macresource.com, regarding the problem my friend's 1.67MHz 17 inch G4 powerbook is experiencing. I haven't installed iPhoto onto my brother's Pismo yet. Perhaps, the problem is not with the Pismo :-)

It may interest you to know that Apple is NOT RESPONSIBLE for stupid people who cannot be bothered to learn the software they are using.

iPhoto is fine. THE USER is almost always the problem.

chas-m,
Easy does it, man. She's a good friend of our family. She's an enthusiatic and fast learner. Just not patient. This is her first Mac ever. For less than 4 months or so, she has managed to familiarize herself pretty well in all of the operations of the machine and its apps; a bit slow with iPhoto.

chas_m....that was kinda out of line, dude. Most people do not use computers the way we do - it just doesn't come to them intuitively or quickly. I agree that the user is usually the issue, but it's usually ignorance...not stupidity..
