white macbook LCD bezel cracked

I've had the wrist rest part of the case replaced under warranty/recall twice already. Now the top bezel surrounding the LCD just cracked right on top of one of the linear things that stick out a millimeter. Has anyone had that happen and did the Apple Store replace it?

Yet another reason why I want them to release the new MacBook Pros with Ivy Bridge already.

It looks like this.

Sounds like you have gotten your money's worth if you've hada that much use out of the machine.

Ivy bridge CPUs are not going to be available in bulk before early fall as far as I can tell.

I'm hoping to get one myself to replace a 5 year old MBP that's been in the Apple repair shop more times than I can remember.

How old is your Macbook? The newer it is the more likely it is you will get a replacement. My fall 2006 model the Apple store quit replacing bezels on in fall 2010, and my spring 2008 model has had a replacement bezel as recently as spring 2011. Both of my Macbooks had the screen crack in your photo, and had cracks on the wrist rest part of the case as well. The newer one has more cracks now, but I've given up on additional replacements as the cracks just don't bother me anymore.

It's worth making a genius bar appointment if you have time and one nearby just to have it looked at to determine if you qualify for a repair. Be aware that if a repair is granted, odds are good your Macbook will be shipped away for the work, so come prepared to give it up for a week or so. Otherwise, if you can't get a replacement, a new bezel runs maybe 10-15 bucks on ebay, and it's fairly easy to replace yourself.

I disagree that the bezel is easy to replace - it requires a lot of disassembly of delicate parts and wiring arranged just so.

Speaking of MacBook top cases cracking, I recently had my first splinter of plastic break off on my Black MacBook. I bought it refurbished in Fall of 2008, is Apple likely to do the repair still?

No it doesn't. It is held in by a dozen little plastic clips and some adhesive tape. Nothing more.

If the only crack is to the bezel, and the top case itself is not damaged, the bezel isn't really that hard to replace. You don't have to tear down the entire case to do it, though many/most online guides will have you do so. Yes you do have to ensure the cables at the hinge area are not pulled out of their channel, but the bezel itself basically snaps into place. Go slow, don't use extreme force, and it's doable. If the OP is not comfortable with it then let someone else (i.e., Apple if they will) do it.

I would still recommend the OP check if Apple will replace his bezel for him, most particularly if his palmrest is showing any additional cracks, as this would be an ideal time to get that done also, and that job is not exactly a breeze.

I just had it done last week for free on a Black MacBook purchased in June 2007. First Apple Store I took it to didn't have the black part in stock but said they could order it, but also found that another nearby Apple Store did have the Black top case, so they made an appointment for me there (actually 3 consecutive appointments so that the Genius would have time blocked out to do the repair while I waited).

Then a few days after I had it replaced at the second store, the first store called me to say that the part arrived and to bring it in. I guess they never canceled that part order.

Totally free, while I waited, although some of the paperwork did show costs of $104 for the case and $39 for labor, but there was no charge to me.

And it's a brand new keyboard and trackpad along with the plastic.

Thanks for the info, then I will look into getting it done. Only one Apple Store near me, 45 minutes each way, so I don't want to waste a trip.

i have an extra i could mail you, but the repair is a little delicate, only because the small gray plastic clips can be tricky to seat properly.

Just a follow-up. I'm at the Perimeter (Atlanta) Apple Store right now and they are fixing the bezel free of charge. Should take about 30 minutes.

Thanks for this info! I have an early 2006 BlackBook which is just starting to show a crack on the right palm rest. I figured that treating it with kid gloves had screwed me for a plastics replacement as that program was done. I'll take it in ASAP.
