windows XP Pro $39.99? Need it for my MacBook

This person has a ton of these and it looks like it is probably a scam, what do you think?

[cgi.ebay.com]

SInce I found out that I can't run just the XPPRO from my VPC7 on my new MacBook, I've been wasting way too much time trying not to buy another version of windows ( I own VPC5 w w 98, VPC 5 w WXPpro and VP7 w XP pro).

Not being a windows guy, it seems that my 3 choices are
A- Slipstream a disc ( which seems way too complicated).

B- Try to locate the media only that has XPPro with SP2 and use my license to authorize

C- Buy a new XPPro (or XP home) that has the SP2 on it.

$39.99 sounds like it's too good to be true, what do you experts think?

Are there any others in my position that have VPC but want to use windows on the mac? Now that Parallells is $80, I will stick with Boot Camp unless it drives me crazy. I want to see what the new OS does.

Thanks

Let's see. Seller registered in Netherlands, item supposedly in Australia, item shipping from Hong Kong. new seller, directing buyers to a separate website which has fake registration data. seller also has links to another site registered in CHina that's been open under 2 months. The description is actually for 2 different items (IOW, it doesn't match the title). What about this does not scream scam to you?

Thanks for pointing this seller out. Off to report for a myriad of listing violations.

A scam, really?????

Price in Euros; location given as "fdgret, Australia", but the zero feedback seller has been a member since June 2006 in The Netherlands; will send you "trucking #" when it ships from Hong Kong; can't spell software, plus this incomprehensible drivel:

"cuz ebay not let us sell oem softwear
On ebay just our ad page not for sale
to USA and AU free shipping now
you can dirctly go our website buy
www.oemsoftwear.com
when i got your payment i'll send online trucking # to you asap
if 7 biz days package not to your hands we will do full refund
thank you"

Seriously, it reeks of fraud. I can't believe someone has bid on it.

Unfortunately, you may have to shell out for the software.

It would really rub me the wrong way to pay nearly $300 for XP Pro. I wouldn't get XP Home.

My life goes smoothly and in regular intervals

An acquaintance working for M$ in its headquarter in WA could purchase a copy of XP Pro for $60. So anything cheaper I'd say "It's a scam!"

Kap

SoCal for now.

Cheapest legit source I personally know of are the OEM choices from Newegg. You must make a hardware purchase at the same time, so get a $5 mouse.

If you can get the media from somewhere, the VP license for XP should work fine.

With a legit license to XP purchased and in hand, you might feel OK installing a bit torrented copy of SP2. (As long as you are not still using it with VPC on some other machine.) This might work with your VPC XP serial number. If not, you would also need a hacked serial number. But you'd still be running only a single copy of Windows XP, which you have a legit license for.

Don't ask who the bell's for, dude. It's you.

It might work, but it wont be legit.

Do you have any need for any other MS software for Windows? I did the Action Pack thing - $300 for a boat load of MS's finest bloatware. But I am certainly getting my use out of it.

About time

>Do you have any need for any other MS software for Windows?

I am only doing this because my accountant says I need to be on Quickbooks and that the Mac version sucks. I hope that is the only program I ever have to run. I just bought a Blackberry to avoid having Windows mobile - (Palm was not an option on T-mobile).

>It might work, but it wont be legit.

I am not a lawyer, but if I bought a version to use on my Mac, why wouldn't it be legit. Perhaps I would technically need to have VPC loaded on the Macbook, (even though it won't run)? Is it M$'s intention (the law seems to always come down to intent) that I need to pay them full price all over again for an OS that I already purchased 2 and 1/2 times?

It's all in the EULA. If it's a copy of XP that came with VPC, it may only be installed on VPC. Same thing goes with OEM PCs. Just because it came with XP and now the hardware is getting scrapped, doesn't mean the license is good for other hardware.

That said I'm confused on the actual purchase of VPC in your case. You seem to say you got "VP7 w XP pro." Or did you get VPC7 and buy a retail version of XP Pro?

FWIW, you never purchase the OS. You are just purchasing a license to use it as the license says. The version that comes with VPC says you can only have it installed on VPC and you can't transfer it. That's all you paid for, not a version that can be installed without VPC.

So if VPC resides on the MacBook in an unusable state are you saying that you think it might conform?

I bought VPC to run under Mac OS 10.4, not a particular piece of hardware. My hardware changes all of the time. 10.4 is on my MacBook but VPC won't work, so what's the problem as long as it is erased from my old machine?

I just noticed Crossover - this would really solve this issue if it would run Quickbooks.

No. If the copy of XP you have came with VPC, XP can only be installed on VPC, not a hardware PC.

You only licensed XP to run on VPC, you didn't pay for it to run a MacBook. It's just a matter of the license agreement. I don't make the rules, I just know them well so the BSA doesn't bankrupt me.

OK thanks Mavic.

What does BSA stand for?

Do they negotiate or do they just bankrupt people?

BSA is Business Software Alliance, formerly known as SPA or Software Producers Association. From all reports, their negotiations are the "gun at your head" type. Usually settled for payment of the equivalent of near full retail cost of enough copies to replace every unlicensed or undocumented copy of software found on an organization's computers. Then they tack on a fine. Or have the computers and software confiscated, often including any and all backups they can find. They can also bypass some of the usual legal proceedings to obtain a search warrant, making the burden of proof on the organization instead of BSA. Since they offer rewards of up to $200,000 to reporters of use of pirated or unlicensed software, they get a number of former workers or ticked off current employees turning in their employers.
