My son has a White MacBook with the following specs: 2.0gHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM. When started, the display flashes a little part of the time and other times it does nothing. The startup tone is heard and the SuperDrive can be heard but nothing happens after that.

Here's what I've tested. I connected an external monitor to the MacBook to see if it was just a display issue but nothing came up on the external monitor. I took the hard drive out of it and put it in my docking system and was able to start my MacBook from his drive so it's not the hard drive.

I replaced the RAM in his MacBook with some RAM I had here and that didn't help anything. I tried to get it to start from an external FireWire drive (I had removed the internal drive to make sure it would look for another startup disk) and that didn't work. I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM. I don't think the PRAM reset as I only heard one startup tone and nothing after that.

My gut instinct tells me it's the logic board but I'm really, really hoping it's not!

Any suggestions or opinions?

Sounds like a bad logic board to me.

How long did you give it to chime a second time when attempting to zap PRAM?

Have you used that display adapter and monitor with that MacBook before?

I held it for about 20 or 30 seconds.

I have used the display adapter and monitor with that MacBook in the past several months ago.

'Might try holding the Command+Option+P+R keys a little longer before giving up. Sometimes there's a long lag before the second chime.

But... Yeah... If you've used that monitor and adapter with that Mac before then it should work... Probably the Mobo.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Now, the question is whether to bring it to an Apple Store to look at or to an authorized service center.
