Symantec pokes at Vista security
By CNET News.com Staff

Windows chief Jim Allchin has urged people to buy Vista for its security features, saying that it will have better protections against phishing attacks, spyware and other malicious code. It's a savvy move on Microsoft's part, as the company's products have borne the brunt of hackers' attentions.

But this week, Symantec said that it had poked around in the networking stack of the latest Vista beta and found lots of bugs. It concluded that in the short term, the stability and security of the upcoming operating system would lag that of XP.

No doubt several proof-of-concept Vista virii will "accidently" escape from the Symantec labs shortly.

Vista, like XP and 2000 before it, is of a scope that it's far better to wait and to buy a computer that was designed for it and that comes with it.

Upgrade at your own risk.

That's how the vast majority of Windows users (and especially big enterprises) acquire their upgraded OSes already, is it not? Makes more sense from a cost standpoint compared to the retail cost of Windows, that's for sure.

putting off, and putting off the release so they can steal more and more of the Mac OS has to make the security coding aspect of Vista's release a nightmare.

Vista is trying to take the security biz away from symantec & such. Even if vista was perfectly safe, symantec would tell you it wasn't.
