I was on a 2-day canoe/camping trip last weekend, and I realized that I left my iPhone on. The battery died that night. I had no idea what time it was - my wife's iPhone couldn't even get a signal at our campsite - and at first, I felt unprotected and alone.

Then I realized that it was a weekend and I was enjoying nature and beautiful weather, so I didn't care what time it was. But when I got home, I was sure to post photos of my trip on Facebook. burnout smiley

There's a difference between wanting to be connected and feeling like you need to be connected. I feel a need to have my iPhone with me so that I won't miss anything. It's like having a security blanket. However, I don't really like having that connectedness all the time. I miss the times (not very long ago) when it was substantially more difficult to get hold of someone on such short notice.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

When I'm feeling naked I really don't ponder where my phone is

I still feel like dick Tracy because I have a cell phone. I feel downright immortal with an iPhone.

For most of my life, cell phones were as realistic as flying cars. The wow factor hasn't worn off yet. So, no - I don't feel naked without one.

I feel naked, not helpless or needy.

I feel naked without my watch. Not to mention I love watches. My 'Phone is used for many things, so yes, nakedness can be a concern.

Mine feels like a Star Trek Tricorder. big grin smiley

I love having my iPhone with me, but I could get along just fine without it; I've felt for a long time that a person should try to have as few things as possible that they absolutely "have" to have. But I do have people who I know would freak out if they knew they couldn't reach me by cell, so there's a sort of nakedness by proxie.

My iPhone IS my mid term memory. Because the link between my short term and long term is busted.

I have to have all my pockets properly loaded all the time (phone, keys, wallet). I feel naked missing any of those things. Not because I need them or feel out of touch. Just because I get paranoid about leaving them somewhere. Keys, actually, more than anything else. If they're not on me, I keep wondering where they are...kind of like when you wake up from a nap taken at an odd time for you, and for a moment you don't have the slightest clue what time it is or where you are.

I make less then 200 minutes worth of calls in a year - if not for prepaid I wouldn't even bother with a cell.
