OK, what is this made of...? (weird Omega-3 capsule labelling)

I just started taking these... were on sale at the local Brooks...

(scroll down to "Omega-3 Fatty Acids", 1000 mg, List No. 69858)

... is it my imagination, or does the supplement info NOT tell you where the omega-3's are coming from? (e.g., fish, flax, etc.) ? You would think that if it was fish oil, it would be labelled as such, and the composition in terms of the EPA and DHA seems to be the same as the fish oil...

The label on the bottle itself is no more informative. They do smell faintly fishy, but nowhere near as bad as some that I've used.

It is coming from evening primrose oil (GLA), which is just another form of omega-3, AFAIK

Racer X, where'd you see that? Am I just going blind? (Egads, should I be taking something for that too?!?)

... strange that it wouldn't then just be labeled as "Evening Primrose Oil"...

my mistake, I was looking at 68858.

Send them an e-mail maybe?

I have found that the best value is the Nature Made 1200 mg fish oil capsules from Costco. The KS brand is cheaper by the capsule, but the total EPA/DHA content is less than 1/2 of what the Nature Made is. So for the same cost, I can swallow 4 or 5 of the monster Nature Made capsules, or 10 of the KS ones, which are smaller. The combined for the Nature Made is 712, and the combined for the KS is only 300. My doc wants me on 3 grams total of EPA/DHA for my hip. It cuts down on joint inflammation significantly, above and beyond all the other reasons to ingest omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Hmmmm... now having taken some of these, I'd say I'm betting they are fish of some sort... very slight, but not really unpleasant, "fish burp". They definitely have a fish odor but nearly so bad as some others I've tried. (If anyone's curious, the worst for odor/fish burp have been Nature Made, the best have been Spectrum Norwegian Fish Oil.

The best way to handle it is to keep them in the fridge, or even the freezer (keeps them from going rancid if you get the 5 gallon pails winking smiley and take them in the MIDDLE of a meal. If they are buried in food in your stomach, less burping the fish smell, and they are absorbed more fully along with food anyway.

Costco KS does have an enteric-coated fish oil capsule for sale. They cost twice what the others do. Just another choice.

Racer X, yeah, I knew that (about putting 'em in the fridge or freezer) ... the commentary I made about the fish smell/fish burp was based on them ALL being at room temperature -- so that I could compare apples to apples. The Nature Made ones I bought smelled super-fishy right out of the bottle; the PharmaPure's are in the middle somewhere; and the Norwegian ones had almost no fish smell at all.

Folks, I've researched this one all the way up and back down again. The best value out there is the Carlsson's Fish Oil (not the Cod Liver Oil), lemon flavored. This stuff is molecularly distilled, so it's free from PCB's and mercury. It always tastes fine, never any fishy smell or flavor.

It's not the cheapest, but it is clearly the best (okay, there may be some other as good, but nothing I've found). A good place to buy is www.iherb.com.

Oh, and this is a liquid, you take it with a spoon. But the flavor is really ok, as long as you get the lemon flavored.

"This stuff is molecularly distilled, so it's free from PCB's and mercury."

The Costco KS and the Nature Made are distilled that way as well, although they do have that fish smell. The capsules are far far lower in toxins than fresh or farmed fish.

Fish smell tends to indicate an oxidized product, although not necessarily so.

I'm telling ya, the Carlsson's is the way to go.
