Problems with new Macbook

I bought my husband a Macbook for his birthday and am having problems with it. When you first boot it up and it wants to take you through the initial set-up, it gets all the way to the end and then tells you it can't create a new user account. This is the error message:

Sorry, an unexpected error has occured.

(local account creation failed)
(note this exception originated in the server)...

any ideas on how to get around this?

Can't blame the double post on the Macbook I did it on my iMac :-). We had the store install 2GB of Ram, when we got it home and tried to boot it up, we got a kernal panic. We put back the 512MB that it came with and it will boot up now, but won't get past the initial setup.

Sure--Blame the double post on the poor older iMac :-)
No wonder you are having trouble with the MacBook---the iMac told it how you will treat it when it is no longer new.

I could be wrong about this, but you could choose not to register online for now.
I haven't been through this in a while, but I believe you can just 'Quit' the registration process once you have entered your username and password. Your primary admin acct will be created, and you can continue on your merry way.
In fact, I don't think it's required that you register online at all.

We went a head with the reformat and install. It seems to be working fine now, we were able to get through the setup and he's surfing the web now.

With the 512MB, we put the 2GB back in after we finally got it set up and it was back to kernal panics, so we put the 512MB back in.
