Plagued by squirrels
Posted by: Wags
Date: July 07, 2012 07:59PM
This year I've got four adolescent squirrels, siblings, I'm guessing. The race around the yard chasing each other maniacally, raid the bird feeder, eat my roses, and deconstruct anything they can pull apart. They have ceased to be cute. I chase them out of the yard but all they do is go to the perimeter and wait for me to leave. Can I borrow someone's red-tail hawk?

Motion-sensing sprinklers.

As soon as they run in your yard they get soaked. You can get them in most garden supply stores.

We've had some chewing on the siding. I went through a variety of attempts to chase them away (hah!) and then catch them with a Havahart trap (double-hah!). I considered a pellet gun for just a moment. Then we brought home an abandoned kitty from a golf course. He's grown up watching the squirrels and climbing trees trying to get them. It looks like the squirrels have decided that moving away was adaptive. Of course, we've spent $700 on various vet bills...

We've had the same problem. At first I thought the young squirrels were really cute. They they started chewing branches off the trees and generally causing a mess in the yard. I think they're growing up a bit now.

I can rent you a Chihuahua. Izzy has racked uP three kills so far. The squirrels stay far up in the trees now.

Malibu also is hell to squirrels and chipmunks. The only problem with his hunting is that either he tries to bring the live animal into the house so I can play with it too, or i go out on the deck and find half a squirrel. Not a pleasant sight, I tell ya.

We had a population explosion last year and the year before.
They stripped all my fruit trees. And all they want is the seeds they spit out the best part.
We had no oak acorns at all last year and there were carcasses all over all Winter.
Hardly any this year. Some places near me are having problems with fishers as their populations followed the squirrels and now they are hungry. They are nasty nasty creatures.

You took that photo Wags? I love it.
For some reason I've had very little Squirrel action this year. I know you're not asking for advice but you need to invest in a bird feeder that's less accessible to the squirrels.

Only squirrel "cures" I know of are fatal to the squirrel...

Try searching youtube for "squirrel slingshot". A guy with a collander, about 10 feet of surgical tubing, squirrel bait, and too much free time on his hands.

That IS a really good picture though.

Those little furry bastards have eaten every single one of my wife's tomato plants this year. Even after we covered new plants up with netting, they're chewing through to eat the leaves. I don't think we'll get a single tomato out of them.

My neighbor keeps feeding them and the rats, too. I need to get rid of my neighbor and then the rats and squirrels will go !

I don't think that's legal... even in Texas ;)

Wags;
I'll trade your squirrels for my bear...
You think SQUIRRELS are destructive?

I happened to be outside enjoying the cool breeze at 5 A.M. and caught a whirlwind of squirrel activity.
My next door neighbor has a peach tree and unfortunately about 1/3 of it is on the top of her enclosed porch. They had a litte fire bucket brigade going to move the peaches across 2 roofs and 3 trees (where they ultimately seemed to drop them on the ground most of the time nuts smiley )

A couple of years ago I had six, count them, six young squirrels eating maple tree seeds in a tree near a back yard facing window. One finished eating, walked out on a very small branch and swung onto a very small branch of a close by dogwood tree. He crossed over the dogwood and lept onto a third tree, eventually taking the high road across the whole back yard.

THEN each of the other five in turn followed the same route. It was a hoot to watch.

I love me some Brunswick Stew, but you leave those squirrels alone. Though my Uncle Harvey used to eat them despite living down the street from a perfectly fine grocery store.
