WE HAVE A HOUSE!
Posted by: anonymouse1
Date: August 30, 2012 03:44PM
Just closed this afternoon--first house I or my wife have ever owned--2,000 sq feet, 6 bedrooms, .11 acre lot, 1918 Arts & Crafts/Craftsman/American Foursquare.

We're gutting the basement (mold), doing the various water-diversion/damproofing things, installing high velocity ac and a whole-house dehumidifier, refinishing the wood floors, and repainting/repairing walls/ceilings (well, the contractor is....).

Moving in on November 1, or maybe a bit sooner. So I'll be asking for homeowner advice soon from you good folks.

WHOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!!!

First piece of advice: Get the previous owner to pay for removal of the mold.

After you close ?

Good luck with that.

great!~

I love older houses, although there are certainly problems with all aging structures, their bones are just better. you can't get the workmanship of many older houses any longer, unless it's a custom job.

Thanks. Our mortgage is actually less than we were paying for rent; about the same after adding in property tax and insurance. A LOT less after the mortgage interest deduction....

Congratulations! Now tell me how they managed to squeeze six bedrooms into a 2,000 sq ft house.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

you are one brave man

don't forget that you already have a standard deduction, so only what is OVER that standard deduction saves yuo taxes... in my case it was not that much, maybe $500 less tax IIRC

I have 5 bedrooms, a TV room, a living room, a dining room, 2 kitchens and 2 full bathrooms in a 2200 sq/ft house. 4 of the bedrooms are about 10x12 to 11x13. Common for a child's bedroom.

Oh, and 2 garages. Gotta store the Buick fleet somewhere. We have 6 vehicles total.

Too late, as he just closed. The seller no longer has an interest in the property.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe a couple are in the basement and that doesn't count in the square footage?

Are you going to convert one of the bedrooms into a "playroom"?

I've got 4 bedrooms in 1500 sf of house... add two honkin' big bedrooms and you've got 6.
American 4-squares typically have 4 bedrooms upstairs and none downstairs, no?

Have fun and realize that a lot of things can be bought for the house that don't need to be new new new. I have some acquaintances that go bonkers every time they move and buy new yard tools etc.

Congrats!

One thing about the Lowe's coupon, it only be used on one item so make sure you use it on the highest
priced item. We bought my SIL a new mower the other day as she moved into her home not long ago
and needed a mower. We also bought a few other small items and the lady almost used it on a set
padlocks instead of the mower.

Hammer drill is good advice, but if you don't already own one, get a battery operated electric screwdriver. My best investment was my black and decker 18Volt drill/screwdriver. The thing is only recent starting to die, after countless jobs over 12+ years.

Congrats to being a home owner...
