Why didn't it drop after the iPhone 5 announcement? Isn't that what always happens?

articles i've scanned says wall street is very pleased with how swift and widespread the release will be so everyone's dancing to We're In the Money.

There were no surprises - everything about the iPhone had already been leaked and it was already "priced-in".

(which makes me think the leaks were intentional)

I just looked at After Hours. It was up by 9¢, and the next glance it fell by $4.92! 5 minutes later it was up 13¢. Strange.

No, not always but it does happen frequently. This time, the drop--a significant one--occurred before the news.

The hardware met expectations, and they are going to sell a ton of them.

That's going to please the market.

MGS got it right. There was nothing unexpected in the announcement. The effect of new iPhone and iPod releases was built into the stock price many months ago. Variations in price over the last few days have much more to do with other more current market factors. AAPL prices are much more sensitive to quarterly earnings releases than product anouncements. I'd go so far as to say that there is virtually zero correlation between product announcements and stock prices except for and there shouldn't be an expectation of any.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

If you look at it for 9/12, it did drop down to 657 during the keynote and again afterwards. However, it recovered quickly and ended up up a bit for the day.

More importantly, how did it rise of fall relative to the NASDAQ? The absolute rises and falls you have cited are irrelevant.
