I call BS. "mobile devices" maybe, but they specifically say 85% of the population use "smartphones and/or tablets".

As of March only 50.4% of US mobile users were using smartphones. [www.engadget.com]

And that was only 101.3 million people in the US. [www.bgr.com]

So if 101 is 50% that means there's ~202 million mobile users in the US - meaning more than a third of the US population doesn't use mobile devices.

If we can't get more than 66% of the population to use a mobile device in the US, fat chance that the global average of smartphones & tablets is 85%.

<<As far as mobile internet usage, roughly 1.1 billion users had access to the mobile web at the end of 2011. >>
far from 85%

And about 3/4 of them are talking on their phones while they drive to work.

My bike is a mobile device.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

....forget while driving...have you seen those people who do it while walking.....???

.....you see them in the street never taking their eyes of their devices....now you CAN do more than one thing at a time but walking and looking at your device is not possible......

My bike is a mobile device.

Agreed. The key to that statement is the definition of "mobile device". Does it include GPS units, pagers, dumb phones? My TV remote is a mobile device, as is my garage door opener.

As I noted above, they specifically say "smartphones and/or tablets". Pretty sure your bike, GPS units, pagers, dumb phones, TV remotes, garage door opener... don't qualify as that.

When's the last time you traveled abroad? The last few times I've been to Europe (going back to 2000), mobile device market share there was FAR higher than in the U.S. at the same time. From what I've read, the same is true in many Asian countries.

It is what it is.

It's been a couple years. And, again, keep in mind they're specifically saying "smartphones & tablets" - not just "mobile devices."

UK leads European smartphone usage

The UK is the leading European country in smartphone usage, according to the latest research by comScore.

Against an average penetration of mobile subscribers of 45.2 percent, 52.6% of UK consumers had used a smartphone

If I'm reading that right, 45% of the population are mobile subscribers. 52% have simply "used a smartphone". So if the UK leads Europe, they're still only at about 25% smartphone usage, as of March of this year.

According to [mobithinking.com] At the end of 2011, there were 6 billion mobile subscriptions.

So I think it's quite possible there are 6 billion mobile subscriptions out there. I think the number of people is undoubtedly lower, and the number using "smartphones & tablets" is only a fraction of all that.
