PLEASE DO NOT PUT BASEBALL SPOILERS IN THREAD TITLES OR IN THREADS WITHOUT A WARNING

This is getting a little tiresome.

Have a little courtesy for those who haven't seen a game.

Not to be argumentative, but how exactly can you be on the internet and not come across the results somehow somewhere?

Baseball isn't narrative. Once the game is over it's NEWS, which is probably why it's on the NEWS!

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

people who dont' want to be told of sports scores really need to put a few pillows over their head - wherever they are! - before they can get home to their television. and, then, when they turn on said television, make sure they are not on a channel where some NEWS might be broadcast.

I'm convinced this whole spoilers thing is indicative of what is wrong with our internet-obsessed culture

I understand the frustration, but I'm also of the opinion that this place is almost as much if a social gathering as a sandwhich shop or similar. I wouldn't expect the ppl at the table to discuss a game that's been played in such vague generalizations so that they didn't ruin it for someone. It's happened enough here with various sports that I think one should almost expect it. At least realize its a possibility and avoid looking until they are caught up on their viewing.

It's unreasonable and obnoxious to post any kind of spoilers in a thread title. I noticed that some of the defenders of the practice in this thread are the very same folks who have repeatedly posted sports spoilers after being asked not to. I have to wonder what is wrong with those folks that they have to persist in something that is clearly only done to annoy others.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

The very long history of this forum and dealmac is not to post spoilers in the thread title. this is and was true always true for sports. But it is and has also been always true for TV shows too. so spoilers for 24 and LOST were also not allowed in thread titles.

I do not find it particularly difficult to avoid seeing the result of a game if I work to avoid it.

I agree too, but freerad doesn't have to be insulting ("It's pretty easy unless some jerk decides to post a spoiler without a warning.") about it. There is a part of me that thinks not having a spoiler in a headline is a reasonable request.

But there is a larger part of me that wonders why my speech and the speech of countless others has to be restricted so that a handful of time-shifters won't be inconvienced.

Why can't the forum rule just as easily be: don't come here if you don't want to risk a spoiler? The current tradition lets a minority dictate our forum use. I don't agree with it.

I have never posted a spoiler in a headline but it is now becoming very tempting to me.

During the Olympics, the Evening News with Scott Pelly didn't give out the scores and results for the first couple of days for the same reason, which was stupid. They though better of it and simply told their listeners to turn their heads and mute the television until they delivered the Olympic NEWS.

Nobody is trying to spoil anything intentionally for anybody. The results of "anything" can be subject to that request for the courtesy of keeping a secret. I wouldn't tell the scores because I know it pisses certain people off. But that doesn't make it reasonable.

And it's not just here. I love sports and so do my friends. Too many of them tape instead of watching the games. They're always trying to get those of us who watched the game to stop talking about it. Even at dinner. Crazy.

If the Raiders played today and I missed the game. First thing I want to know is did they win or not? I'm still going to watch the game regardless. Because I'm a real fan.

Game of Thrones, etc., is narrative. A story. Knowing the end of which could be ruinous. Sports are not narratives. They're events. Which become news once their over. Nobody is in favor of spoilers in thread titles. If it's done, it's by accident. Getting beat up about it is unreasonable.

I think it is reasonable to get beat up over it. I first complained about spoilers in subject-lines/titles at the old place ~11 years ago.

I am a big believer in avoiding TV ads 100% of the time. I almost never watch real time tv. I either download programming or watch live broadcasts delayed. It save time (lots of it) and saves aggravation of annoying ads.

More and more people are doing this. Once you experience life without TV ads for a few weeks, you'll never want to go back.

It's quite easy to avoid the news of a games final score with some effort.

I consider this place safe since 99% of participants are aware of the 21st century common courtesy of not posting spoilers in thread titles.

I completely disagree with vision63's logic about news vs narrative... it doesn't make it any less true that many wish to avoid the final score of a live game. You're simply defining terms to fit your view. So what if the final score is 'news' - doesn't change a thing in my mind. I am avoiding news sites - obviously. A news program is SUPPOSED to give you the news. It's not their job to protect time shifters. Their job is to give us news.

And I really don't get $tevie's comparison with Apple events... who watches those things for the action and suspense? We just want to know the bottom line and most would be happy to get a one paragraph summary before the broadcast so we won't have to watch it.

BUT if a tiny group of people asked to not post spoilers in thread titles, I would oblige - why not? Why get bothered about it?

Please folks, I'm asking nicely... please don't put spoilers for sporting events in thread titles.

I don't post spoilers. So perhaps people could, in return, admit that some people follow the news all day long and find it almost unbelievable that a person can avoid the results of a nationally televised sports event. Between Twitter, FB, public radio, and reading the news sites I could no more avoid what happened in a game like that than I could fly.

So I'd like a little bit of understanding as to why I find this completely baffling.

So I'd like a little bit of understanding as to why I find this completely baffling.

:-)

Granted - it's hard to remain ignorant of news while reading new sites. AND while reading FB, twitter and listening to public (or private) radio.

And I even answer the phone, "I don't know the final score of the game - DO NOT give it away. Hi... what's up?"

You also can not lose weight with a diet that includes a nice big piece of cake after every meal:-)

I realize that I'm swimming upstream and I fail probably 30% or more of the time, but the effort is worth it to me...

It's pretty obvious that the first step to take in avoiding the news of the final score is to also avoid twitter, FB, radio (public or otherwise) and of course, new sites. In my case, I already do not deal with twitter or FB. I listen to radio only in my car, but not if I'm trying to stay ignorant of news. So for me, the only real effort is to avoid news sites until after the event.

I can finish a 4 hour baseball broadcast in 2.5 hours without missing a single moment of action. That's only one benefit - the other is remaining blissfully ignorant of TV commercials. Completely... blissfully ignorant...

It's a state of being that I would gladly spend money to achieve. But I really only have to exert a tiny bit of effort - and depend on the kindness of strangers...

On some forums, posting spoilers without a warning will get you banned. Doesn't matter if it's sports, movies, TV... it's still a spoiler. The last stats I saw (which was a couple years ago) is that over 30% of people "time shift" content.

Overall I really don't think those who don't want spoilers in the thread title are the minority. It's a very reasonable request.

Nobody is saying that in total. Not a single person here purposefully disrespected someone by posting a spoiler. It was always by accident. My only issue is people getting beaten up about it. But the people that want it don't necessarily "deserve" it. It's news. They only thing they "deserve" is the courtesy of a fellow forum member towards another in general, which means that you will accommodate their unreasonable request because you like them (as I like everyone here).

But it doesn't make them reasonable or necessarily deserving.

Back of the bus? That's what this equals?
