I can load the Forum, but not much, if anything else. It seems like it must be a DNS issue, but I have no idea what to do. DSL has been up and down all afternoon. It worked almost perfectly duriing the Apple streaming event, then went kaput just as it ended. I called to report the outage, then some tech support person made me do endless troubleshooting crap, most of which I had already done. I have reset the modem and router a dozen times. Sometimes things work for a while, all websites load, then some sites just stop loading. Can't even load EarthLink's webmail page now. Pretty much just the Forum will load.

Is there anything I can do, as far as changing the DNS address or something. I can't bear to call in again. I will no doubt get angry with whomever answers the phone and tries to tell me it must be one of my cables, even though I have swapped them out, taken the router out, reset the router, etc., etc., etc. I can't google how to change the DNS or what to change it to, because Google won't load either.

8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 are the Google public DNS servers. Set those up in your network prefs and that may resolve things. Of course that gives Google access to your every move on the internet, but they already know what you're doing anyways.

It is back now, but at least I have those to try if/when it goes down again.

Edit: just went down again. Wonder why only this site will load?

Edit: dropped in the 8.8.8.8 and voila, I can surf again. Now I need to see if the EarthLink comes back on my other machines. I only changed it on my iPad.

You can change DNS on your router so that all your connected devices use the same DNS...

Thanks. I was going to do that, but I am having such a bad day today, I want to wait till tomorrow to go into the airport setup utility. I don't want to mess with it tonight.

I changed the two computers we will need early tomorrow, and my iPhone and iPad to the openDNS servers and they seem to be working, so I will wait and see what things look like in the morning. Now that I have four choices, at least I can trouble shoot. Don't know what the heck is up with either EarthLink or AT&T, but it is really annoying.

I hear you...we've been mostly lucky here with our Verizon dsl, the one problem we had two years ago took them about 2 weeks to diagnose, but it's been rock solid ever since. As with any technology, it's great when it works!

Hope things settle down for you tomorrow and that your Wed is better than today!

Thanks. Just a lot of little crappy stuff hapened today. Very glad the DSL quit at the end and not the beginning of the Apple event.
Usually the DSL is solid, but when it goes belly up, all they want to do is endless troubleshooting that does nothing. They will never just put in a trouble ticket to let someone know that there are issues in my area. Doesn't help that the support people are half a world away.

Odd function thing. I'm on cable and have two ways to address access (cable modem and Cisco router. At times the modem simply stalls, when that happens I switch to router and bang - I'm back up. All weird to me since the router works off the modem.

I'm actively seeking cable alternatives in SoCal but seems nothing else ls reliable is out there.

Can't wait for AT&T or someone else to take over more phone company territory so they can provide fewer options for more money.

Have the same thing happen with Comcast cable every now and then.

They'll even make their technicians go through a complete home troubleshoot before telling them the problem or outage is on their end.
The techs get just as frustrated.

That's what I ended up doing. The main problem was, I could not search for the opendns numbers, since google would not load.

Oh, yeah, oops. The DNS I use in those situations is the Level 3 servers. They have an IP of 4.2.2.2 (actually the last number can be 1,2,3,4,5 or 6). But those 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 Google IPs are even easier to remember.
