Trash Can Preferences

Where do I find the trash can prefs in Mountain Lion? All of a sudden, everything I put in the trash is deleted immediately. I don't think that's how it used to work.

FinderPreferences is the only place that has Trash options. If you are getting that effect, either you have a 3rd party app in action or a problem that Safe Boot could fix.

I threw Spotify in the trash today and it's been working that way since then. I don't think it ever worked that way before. I don't know that I have a third party app going......

Have you booted into your Recovery Partition and run repair disk & repair permissions on your main drive? That'd be step 1, esp. per your power interruption comment.

Does the Finder give a warning that it's going to be deleted immediately?

When deleting files from a mounted server volume, it's standard procedure to delete immediately, but the Finder warns you. Just wondering if it's mimicking that behavior.

Zoidberg-Well, I don't know anything about a recovery partition. I did the disk repair and permission repair, but still the same behavior.

If there is damage to the disk, you have to do the repair from the recovery partition. Running it while in the boot disk won't repair anything.

Recovery Partition: Restart, hold down the Option key, and then pick to boot from the Recovery Partition.

Towards the bottom of the page is your problem. I've used these steps before and they worked well. Not sure how they'll play with Mountain Lion.
