Retina Display "under the microscope"

Interesting analysis:

"In Conclusion:

We must keep in mind that, as Gary Marshall (@garymarshall) points out in his definitive article on Retina Display:

“When Apple talks about a Retina display it's not referring to a worldwide standard or a set of specifications. It's actually just a marketing term, and it simply means that the screen has sufficient pixel density, so that when you look at it normally, you can't make out all the individual pixels.”

We must remember that viewing distance is always a factor, and what looks pixelated at 2 inches from your nose won’t look pixelated 15 inches away. So between all these devices it’s generally agreed that Apple has mastered the art of creating a beautiful screen. What’s the difference between devices? Much smaller pixels, packed much more densely into an area. That’s basically what you’re getting when you’re paying for Retina Display. And many will swear up and down that it’s TOTALLY WORTH IT. After all, Retina Display boasts as many as 3.1 million pixels, better than an HDTV."

I was just about to post the same thing in the thread below.
2/3 the size in height means (0.66 x 0.66=0.44) in area. So the Mini's pixels are a little over double the size of the retina iPad pixels (2.25x to be exact).

But then again, I've never really had a problem with the iPad 2 screen and think it looks fine. And I have a iPhone 4s which I think looks much better than a 3GS screen. So probably the mini would be fine for me since the screen will seem sharper than the iPad 2.

All I know after just leaving Apple store and playing with iPad mini and retina iPad is, yep, me old eyes really like that retina display! So much so, that I might wait to see if Apple puts retina on iPad mini in an update. iPad mini is nice though.

Theoretically, beyond a certain distance, the pixel density should not be discernible. Would your old eyes happen to be nearsighted or farsighted old eyes?

But then again, I've never really had a problem with the iPad 2 screen and think it looks fine.

I don't have a problem exactly. Well sorta. One day I picked up the iPad 2 and just happened to notice that I was looking at the pixels. I may have spent a lot of time with my 4S that day. When I got my new iPad, the display looked fantastic and the iPad 2 looked- not so. Even though I could see the pixels, it was fine until I saw the new iPad.

So probably the mini would be fine for me since the screen will seem sharper than the iPad 2.

I've bee wondering about this. Macworld says you can definitely see the pixels.

That's why those who know will wait for version two of the mini.
