Mezuzah. It has a roll of scripture inside. A menorah is an 8 branched candelabra used at Hanukkah.

Edited to add: Technically, the parchment scroll itself is the mezuzah. The covering is the mezuzah case. The scroll is sacred, the case is not.

Thanks for the name.

I'm going to Israel and Jordan and wanted to get the word in my dumb brain. Yeh, I might get one for my door even tho I'm not Jewish it would make a meaningful something to bring back.

Wow. I had forgotten that Menudo wore their pants so tight you could tell if they were Jewish.

Thank you for this post. Last year sometime there was a CPR class held in North Hollywood at this dump of a hotel complex. Apparently one of the rooms was rented out for the class. I walked about the cneter courtyard and noticed these (mostly) metal things affixed to the door frames on most every unit. I wondered what they were. Assumed they were some sort of religious item and meant to post the pic I took here to ask about them. Forgot all about them until now. Now I know... thanks!

You cannot live in North Hollywood without being overrun with religious Jews on their way to or back from temple, all on foot, both on Friday and Saturday

Lol... Didn't realize that. It was my first experience of seeing those things on the doors. At first I thought it was some kind of halfway house type arrangement for addicts. It was just odd at the time.

In my youth, I delivered newspapers in Freeport, NY. (Poor Freeport, but that's another story...) There were apartment buildings on my route where these mezuzah cases were mounted on numerous doorways. I always liked them. Aren't you supposed to touch them and do something before entering?
I'd forgotten all about them til now. You don't see Jews in Bedford, VA.

I'll save you the trouble. Latin American jews have developed a tradition of putting on tight pants and eating soup on or shortly after their 13th birthdays to signify that they've become men. I think what lead us to that was that pretty much all of the mezuzahs are manufactured in Mexico these days.
