Forbes says iPhone loyalty waning.....

2012 is shaping up to be the year when the glow surrounding Apple‘s mobile products suddenly got dimmer – first from the technology press, now from a survey. According to recent research by Boston, Mass.-based Strategy Analytics, fewer people who own iPhones are planning to replace them with newer models from Apple, marking the first decline since Apple released the iPhone in 2007.

That's not a loyalty problem, it's a lack of incentive to buy.

"In Western Europe, just 75% of users will by their next phone from Apple, down from 88% in 2011, while the proportion among American users has slipped to 88%, from 93%, according to the research"

good Grief.. in any other market Forbes would be screaming "MONOPOLY !"

It's also a supply issue. Apple still can't make 'em fast enough.

I can understand this.

I'm SERIOUSLY considering jumping to an Android based phone. Calendar, Contacts, Notes and Search ON THE DEVICE have always been disappointing to me. Managing large numbers of Apps also is an ordeal that Apple has done woefully little to improve. The 5" screen is a small improvement but the various Samsung Galaxy models offer impressive screens NOW. Other features I miss are the ability to use a good stylus, being able to swap the battery and handwriting recognition.

I just got back from an extended road trip so, phone research is not a top priority right now. By Black Friday, I'll probably be ready to make a well informed choice. If I do "jump ship" from Apple and ATT, I can unlock & jailbreak my iPhone4, install a pay as I go SIM and basically use it as an iPod Touch (or just sell it and get an iPod Touch).

It will actually be nice to have more choices available.

My loyalty is waning because iPhone 5 is not actually available to buy

Huh? Android is something like 75% of the market these days. Forbes is reporting only 75% of iPhone users are willing to buy again. Unless Apple can pick up whatever that 13% loss equates to in actual users from switchers coming from other OSes, Apple's share of the matket would continue to go down. That could be significant, but maybe Apple could persevere with say 10% of the phone market and 50% (also shrinking, maybe 60% now) of the tablet market.

I hate app management on iOS. I really hate not being able to download past purchases because the app store no longer carries a compatible version.

Sil', correct me if I'm wrong (as I may be) I don't think the Android market share is based on actual sales but rather shipments (or is that Samsung units?).

Also, regardless of the situation, I hear, while developers r not crazy about the iOS market place, they like Android even less (because they make far less money):

...on Android I've made far far less revenue on the same apps, only to see my app get 'returned' daily and probably pirated. It's worth the pain still at this point to hit iOS first and Android afterwards, especially to make 3X to 4X revenue on iOS.

...which would suggest that you'll have an app issue. Of course, the situation may be like Mac and Windows apps (there's plenty of good choices in each product category such that app deficiency is not a problem).

:agree smiley:

I'll stick with Apple, but two things need to happen: reason to upgrade (device evolution) and better trade-in/eligibility. I'm not eligible to upgrade to an iPhone 5 at the discounted cost until late Spring.

I hope many who say they're waiting for their fully subsidized eligibility to come up, aren't assuming that it takes two years. For me and my parents (on a family plan) full eligibility came in at about a year and 3 months after we bought the 4 to get the 4S (we actually waited for the 5 though).

Not quite sure how any of the subsequent discussion here relates to the point of the article, which was a valid one. The growth curve, which previously seemed to have no ceiling, has leveled off. That's significant, and it absolutely puts Apple in a position of having to do something big and bold (and successful) to avoid the perception of being on its way down.

I thought Google only counted activations of official Android devices, which does not take into account any forked versions of Android (not Kindle Fire, Nooks, etc) or devices still in the retail channel.

As far as end user experience with app stores, I like the Google Play store experience much better. I find it loads faster, Google gives a decently detailed list of permissions the app requires before installation, allows for betas, and best of all, most devices are not forced into using Google Play for installation.

Neither Apple's nor Google's store is perfect.

They don't need to innovate. The need to "compete." Android phones run from large to small to gigantic to tiny. Apple cannot continue to put out a one-size-fits-all phone and then lose cred to the likes of the Galaxy Note and S3 which tons of the kids want. LeBron James is rockin' the Note on commercials and ALL of the BBoys want it. Where's Apple's answer? There isn't one. Stop suing and compete.

Your first sentence doesn't make sense. People are discussing why their loyalty is waning which includes many possible market conditions (one of which might be what's going on with Apple's biggest phone competitor).

Simply put, unlike other manufacturers, Apple makes their products too good (be it overall features or even the materials used). It's much like how their computers seem to last considerably longer than their pc counterparts. I'm still using the iPh4, ftr.

Could be. So where did you get those nonsense percentages in your prior comment?

For quarter three 2012, IDC reported 75% shipped. Yes, shipped, but to be fair iPhones in the same quarter were also reported as shipped. Interesting note, even Symbian still outsold Window Phone. MS is doing a terrible job witht Windows Phone, when it comes to actually getting people to buy one. RIM also outsold Window Phone.

I'm not buying that argument. Plenty of companies are making good phones these days. Sure, not every model is an iPhone competitor, but there's plenty of quality to go around.

Even if your assertion were true, how could good quality and high satisfaction result in less chance of consumers wanting to upgrade to the same brand in the future.
