Crucial M4 128GB SSD Failed....Disapointed

Disapointed... My Crucial M4 128GB SSD failed yesterday. It was only two months old. I will have to make contact with Crucial tomorrow, sure hope warranty return isn't a great big hassle.

I installed a Samsung 830 128GB SSD in my MacBook today, and all is good with my MacBook again. I hope it lasts long than the Crucial M4

hope you kept your receipt - really - most SSD makers insist on it...

No problem with the receipt, I bought it on line, so I have an email with receipt.

its annoying, but any drive can fail. SSDs should be more reliable than HDDs

so far it seems the opposite.

best to boot/run programs off the ssd, but keep data on a hard drive.

Hmmm, I had seriously considered getting an M4, but finally opted for the OWC SSD. It's still working (knock on wood) after about 6 months.

I haven't had any OWC SSD drives fail yet, and I've got about 8 of them running every day, in various machines at the office.

We have at least 6 OWC SSDs plus one m4.
Our first SSD failure happened the other day (OWC).
In contrast, we've had several hard drive failures.

All have been on warranty.

We also back everything up!

Based on what? I've been SSD booting for about 6 months and now firmly believe that HDDs introduce errors that result in periodic meltdowns and recovery/restore needs.
If I had a total failure of one or my SSDs tomorrow and had to fuss with warranty replacement I'd probably still feel like it was worth the bother.

Because when SSDs fail there's no getting back data.

At least there's a chance with a HDD.

I have not run without regular backups for several years; I hope there aren't many out there to whom this would be a relevant condieration.

I have been using SSD's as boot drives in some machine, and they do fail. I would guess no more or less reliable than regular hard drives.

I called Crucial on the 7th of Dec, regarding my failed 128GB Crucial M4 SSD, they had me run through a troubleshooting process (attempting to boot the drive, power off, then attempt to boot again). Drive did not respond, they gave me a RMA and I mailed it off to Crucial on 8 Nov, yesterday a new 128GB Crucial M4 SSD was delivered by UPS.

Despite the fact my Crucial M4 SSD drive failed and it was an annoyance to have to install another drive (Samsung 128 GB SSD) into my MacBook Pro and copy files to it (I had a back up of all my applications and data) Crucial made the return process fairly painless. I gave them the serial number off the drive and they issued me the RMA, didn't even have to email a copy of the sales receipt. Crucial rep I was dealing with over the phone said all M4's they have sold are still under warranty, so not need to prove when/where I purchased it. Crucial rep was really nice, when I gave him my telephone number he recognized the area code as an Oregon telephone number and commented that he was in Medford Oregon.

I hope the new Crucial M4 SSD works better thant he last one, I am giving it to my son since I have already installed the Samsung SSD.
