OT: I did not know Basil flowers
Posted by: lazydays

I started some basil from seed inside the house this spring, transplanted outside for the summer, and it's been inside for about a month now. Today I clipped some leaves for a spicy basil and chicken stir fry and noticed it is flowering!

Pinch off the flowers!

The plant will produce lots more and larger leaves if you pinch them off.

Pinch it a back more and it will last longer.

And, bring them inside before the frost!

Thanks for the advice on pinching off the flowers. The plants have been inside for about a month now and apparently are doing very well. I'm using a grow system that I bough that uses fluorescent lighting and then I bought some supplemental lighting for the large plants.

I believe that all plants flower, although sometimes the flowers are too small to see.

Oh, that's a scrawny little basil plant. grinning smiley

How in the world could you make pesto with that?

I have two of the basil plants and so far the size has worked well for me. I take clippings about once or twice a week although I'd like to cook with basil more often. I think it's my favorite herb. I make a fantastic thai green bean dish with basil.

All plants produce flower I agree with free radical. Sometimes the "flowers" look like leaves but they are indeed flowers.

If you have enough flowers, try making a recipe just from the flowers--delicate and delicious!

I didn't know him, either.

Wasn't he in Hendrix' band?

No, no, that was Basil Flowlty. He was an innkeeper that ended up, through a hilarious set of circumstances, sitting in with Hendrix's band... with a moose head stuck on his head, which is why there are no photos of this lineup of the band.

Rumor has it that a young Buddy Miles happened to have car trouble and had to stay at this very inn. He took one look at the moose-adorned drummer trying to see the cymbals, grabbed the drumsticks and reportedly snarled "Back off, Bullwinkle. I'll show ya how it's done." After a spirited jam incorporating "Manic Depression" and "Wipe Out", Jimi asked Buddy to join the band.

Fun Fact: The last Hendrix saw of Basil Flowlty, a waiter from Barcelona was trying to pull off the moosehead, and Buddy Miles, mistaking the waiter's accent ("Meestah Flowlty, Meestah Flowlty!" ), voted for calling the newly-formed band "Bad Gypsies". One typo on a gig poster later, Band of Gypsies was born.
