Greetings from the MOTHERSHIP

I can't spend my week in NoCal without visting you-know-where.

The place is closing early this week in anticipation of the WWDC. I'll probably pick up a video adapter for my MacBook and some Apple goodies for Little Poochie. He said he wants a Thomas the Tank Engine train. I don't think the Company Store has any in stock.

I tried doing an iChat video conference with my family back East at the Stanford computer store yesterday, but the video and audio from my wife's MacBook really sucked. Those Stanfordites must have been using all of the bandwidth.

I know I look like hell. I think I am allergic to something out here. I need more humidity and pollution.

Oh, got it. Sorry. If you ever come out to the Garden State and refer to it as "Jersey" or worse, "Joisey" (which no native ever, ever says), you will be swiftly dealt with by the Tony Soprano crowd.

It seems like 25% of the cars on the road out here are Toyota Priuses, and everyone else seems to bike everywhere. I also want to live on the food at the little taquerias...it is amazing and cheap.

And motorists yield to pedestrians. Visting my family out here for 25+ years, that concept still strikes me as pretty damn awesome.

You are in a "bubble" area Pooch, that isn't the real California, salaries are HUGE, so everyone can afford the Prius, also the smug level is alarming. The Prius is purchased as a status symbol, not as a way to help the environment. Remember, houses are going for millions, garden shed size houses.

Also, we have to yield to peds, CA Law.
I wouldn't mind it except that you get tons of peds that just step into the street without looking. In fact in Glendale the cops used to set up crosswalk stings where peds would just step into the street right in front of cars, If you didn't yield (slam on your brakes) you would get a ticket.

The higher level of hybrids is partially because they qualify for the HOV lanes with a special sticker

Keep in mind that thought the smug natives of that area call it "northern" california.. there is actually close to 300 miles of the state further north.

Those of us that are actually at the NORTHERN end of the state consider the greater San Francisco Bay Area to be "Central" California..

We also recognise that it's unlikely we will change that habit in people...

Just FYI... grinning smiley

When I worked at Mare Island teaching weapon control classes, I always got in heated discussions with the natives over why they call it Northern California, when it obviously isn't.

Nope, that was just a very recent addition with the HOV stickers.
LA has the same law, more people, more freeways, more HOV lanes, and a lot less "SMUG", so we have a lot less Prius's (Prii? Priuses?) then NorCal.
There is a guy in the SFV who brokers Prius's between SoCal, and NorCal, buys them here, tarts them up with leather, DVD players with headrest monitors, all that bling crap, resells them to the San Rafael "More Money than Brains" crowd. Has a very brisk, very lucrative business.

I'm not a native, but I always got the impression this area is called "Northern" California to differentiate it from the LA area.

I'm not sure how many people in this area or the LA area actually know that there is a part of the state north of Napa and south of Oregon.
