My applications (mail, preview, address book, etc) will not start!

Mail, Preview, Address Book, iChat no longer load. I get a message that they unexpectedly quit - but they never really started. I just downloaded a security update on a quicksilver G4 running Panther. How do I fix this mess? Reload the offending software, delete a pref? I'm off to the Apple site to see if there is any support docs for this.

Did you repair permissions?

Have you tried
- restarting?
- repairing permissions?
- running fsck in single user mode?

I ran MacJanitor. Not sure what all that did. I have restarted. I'll give the others a try.

Guess what? When I try to run Disk Utility it "unexpectedly quits". Now what?

you either need to run a disk repair utility or wipe and reinstall.

It's a common problem after a security update.

Make sure that the problem-apps are in the right location in your Applications folder rather than in a sub-folder or elsewhere on your drive.

Delete the .pkg file for the security update from the /Library/Receipts folder and then reinstall the security update from the downladable version rather than via Software Update.

Then, assuming that the Disk Utility works again, repair permissions and you should be fine.

If that doesn't fix your problem then try deleting the .pkg file for the last OS update you did (10.3.9?) and then re-do the update using the Combo updater.

Well, some things are working, obviously, since you're getting to the finder, and you have a dock, and all that. It'd be interesting to know which regular old apps work, if any, and which don't.

Can you run Console? It's in Applications/Utilities. In ~/Library/Logs, you can get to Crash Reporter for Safari, and see what it says. If you can't run Console, you could still read the log file in Terminal, it's just a text file. If you can't run Terminal, oy.

Well luckily you can still run Safari (or your browser of choice).
