My iPhone 5 screen shattered...and I don't know how

Had the iPhone 5 less than a month. It was fine when I used it at home this morning. I put it in my front right jeans pocket. I had nothing else in that pocket - no keys, change, not even any noticeable pocket lint.

I get to work, take the phone out of my pocket and the screen was shattered. I do not recall hitting anything, or having any pressure applied to that part of my body.

I'm really pissed off. I know accidents happen, and I'm going to have to suck it up, but I've had two previous iPhones (3G & 4) which each suffered one real drop onto concrete from waist height with no damage to their screens. But this one shatters in my pocket with no impact that I'm aware of?

Seems odd to me.

Must have been some sort of impact that struck the screen juuuust right, and the force was spread enough that it wasn't noticeable.

I wonder if the glass was installed so that the screen was slightly torqued and that is what caused it to shatter. If so, that would seem to be a manufacturing defect. It might be hard to prove that is what caused the problem though. We had a skylight shatter for that reason.

A previous drop or bump could have weakened the glass and all it would take is another torque or bend to finish the job.

from my experience with another phone that uses Gorilla Glass along with my colleagues who have similar phones with GG, I can say pretty unequivocally that GG sucks.

Yeah

But it's going to make me very anal about the phone now, knowing that force that is imperceptible to me can break the phone.

Now I'll probably go back to using a case, too.

LifeProof [www.lifeproof.com]

...cheaper elsewhere (Amazon), but direct link to site for info.

Very slim and doesn't add much of anything to the phone, like a Griffin or Otterbox will.

If you bend at the hip then I can see how using that pocket might cause breakage.

Thats what has kept me from getting a smartphone/iphone.

Was the glass facing out or in / against your leg?

The started shipping over a week ago; however, there was such a big demand/pre-order phase that they are curently out-of-stock, directly.

Some other e-tailers still have them in stock.

I'm not certain about that, but I think that it was facing my leg.

The glass shattered almost in the corner - looks like what might happen if the phone was dropped on the corner.

I think I may have paid with an AMEX card. I'll look into that.

if your Amex has purchase protection you're golden as it covers loss or damage for any reason in the first 90 days.

I've used AMEX purchase protection one other time and was refused. Although it was a bit of an unusual issue. My wife and I had purchased a very nice piece of Native American pottery in Santa Fe. We had it boxed up with lots of styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap, we put it in the under-floor stow-n-go area of a Dodge Caravan for the 2000+ mile trek home. It shattered en route. AMEX would not refund any amount of money.

But I did just place a claim for the iPhone and provided all the info they need. Seems to be covered, but they were very clear that it was not guaranteed to be covered and a decision would be made in 2-3 days. Here's hoping I have better luck this time.

did they give you a reason why the pottery wasn't covered? their policy seems to be very open ended; it should count even if it fell off the mantle in the first 90 days. i've had claims for two stolen ipod Touches and a 40" flat screen tv that was damaged 88 days after purchase. never a problem. maybe there are different purchase protection programs. my amex card is thru Costco.

anyway, hope it works out for you this time.

When I broke my iPhone 5's screen (dropped it from 6ish feet), I thought about using AMEX, since it was less than a month old. But it sounded like AMEX would reimburse me the purchase price and then I would be required to send them the iPhone. Then I would have to buy a new iPhone at the non-contract price. Since I had AppleCare+, I opted to use that instead and pay the $50 deductible.

Maybe they have a repair option instead. Let us know how it works out.

given my experience with a broken HDTV i suspect Amex will ask for a repair quote and then reimburse for a repair. they insisted on a repair quote for the TV; the repair would have cost twice as much as the TV's purchase price so they just refunded my full purchase price. Amex did not ask for the TV and they also reimbursed me the price of obtaining the repair quote.
