3TB SATA drive now at $90

Amazon and Newegg both have it at this price:

[amzn.com]

Good to see that price is starting to get back down to pre-Thailand flood prices. I'll probably pick up one of these as a Time Machine drive. 2TB prices aren't even as good per-GB (at least what I can find), so I may go this route.

Yes. Finally!

I guess the 4tb will also be dropping in price as well (sooner than later).

they aren't referral links, as far as I know. Just grabbed the amazon link from the product page. Maybe I should add referral links, though :-)

Too bad that they're Seagates. I've had too many Seagates go bad on me.

That's almost as low I paid a couple of years ago for four 7200 RPM 3GB Hitachis. I got 'em right after the floods, just as prices were starting to go up. Got the last two at one Office Max, and the last two at another Office Max. I should have gone all over town and bought as many as I could... probably could have resold them for a lot of $$$.

Great price but I'm waiting for Western Digital or Samsung. I'm not trusting Seagate as much the last couple years.

You're welcome! I just ordered 2 last night at $150/ea., so the price naturally dropped 40%!

Samsung's HDD division was sold to Seagate last year. The list manufacturers is down to Segate, WD and Toshiba. A nice diagram is here -

Now it's $129.99.

Can anyone explain this?

I've sworn off of Western Digital due to several failures.

Same here, four externals in an 18 month span. I didn't know WD acquired the Hitachi line of drives last year, either. That probably explains why the Hitachi I bought in 2010 is still working.

I've never had a hard drive fail.

Knock on wood...

I'd like to see some statistical data about hard drive failures rather than anecdotal evidence.

...And why Hitachi hard drives are now in short supply.

WD is killing off the brand.

With that move, the quality of hard drives in general just sank like a lead weight. Hitachi was boosting the whole industry.
