Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

I just refurbed my wife's old PC (a Sony dual core) and I sprung the $15 and put Windows 8 on it.

I like 7 but 8 is easy.

I have clients still asking me to help them w/Win7. (How do I uninstall a program? Where is Add/Remove Programs?). I tell anyone who asks to skip 8 unless they like to be frustrated. (Most of my clients are retired folks.) old fogey smiley

Learning 8. Seems ok so far. You can always make it look like 7.

7. Then apply for a free upgrade to 8 so you can go that router later if you choose.

You can't really make it look like 7, at least not without third-party software.

If I'm going to get a PC, it would be the Yoga - the first device that really uses windows 8 (unlike the surface, which is a crippled device as it runs Windows RT not full windows. )

I'd check tonymacx86.com to see if Mountain Lion will run on it

I bought a new laptop earlier than I planned to get 7 on it. My college is using 7 and I don't want to have different systems at home and work.

I played with 8 at the store and I found it completely unintuitive. It's easy doing the things that Microsoft has set up, i.e. clicking on the tiles, but try and get to the OS, the documents folder, or other folders. I couldn't figure out how to. There is no start button, the interface has been totally redesigned.

I've been reading that people who are looking at a new PC are becoming frustrated with Win8 and are considering Macs.

I have both on my VM fusion ware 5. I prefer W 7 over W 8. W 8 can be made to work much like W 7 by just selecting the the Desktop on the start-up window. That gets rid of the crap (my opinion) that is the first big change that one encounters. Then make your shortcut icons for whatever you want to have available.

It appears that MS doesn't use volunteers to test the software before public release.
If it does use them, it either doesn't pay enough attention to their bug/enhancement requests or the volunteers are not doing their jobs well.

I think W 7 will end up being the replacement for XP, and that W 8 will be skipped by many unless whatever comes next is another Vista.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

I find it ironic - all of the issues people are citing (no start menu) is why I'm attracted to windows 8.

But windows is not a primary OS operating environment for me. It's really a more cloud-based scenario, and will likely be that way for me for the foreseeable future.
