Costco film scanning is on its way out? Any other suggestions in NYC?

Hey gang,

I want to get a bunch of film scanned and was thinking of using my friend's membership to get it done at Costco. I know a lot of folks on the forum swear by them so I wanted to try it out. But, I came across this thread on a photo forum stating that Costcos seem to be shutting down film service and most likely by the end of the year: [www.rangefinderforum.com]

So, several questions for people please:

  1. Did they charge by the negative or the roll? How much was it?
  2. How many negatives or slides did you do?
  3. What was the turnaround time?
  4. How high is the resolution? I need scans at least 2000 x 2000 and some up to 4000. How many MBs were the files?
  5. If you live in NYC, do you have any suggestions for places in case the Costcos in Queens or South Brooklyn have eliminated these services?

Thanks folks. I'm trying to get some film negatives scanned so I can start selling some products online by early December, so it would be nice to drop these off by the end of this week. If need be, I'll just choose the main 10 - 15 images I want done and then take them to a photo lab somewhere in NYC. However, the cost seems to be $5 or $10 per 10MB. So, I may end up spending about $100 and only getting 10 images done versus $100 at Costco would probably be about 20 rolls of film.

Thanks for the help!

I don't a solution for you; I've found that high quality scans always cost $$$, especially if you want them saved as tiffs.

If you're going to do this a lot, you might want to invest in a decent scanner.

I usually end up with around a 25 MB tiff when I scan a 35mm negative. With 120 film, it depends upon wether it's 645, 6x7, or 6x9...

I too have had film woes...

I am pretty sure that Costco's service is a resale--ask the person at the photo counter where they send the film for scanning.

Try Luster Photo & Digital, 121 Avenue A (near 8th St. in the East Village), if other options fail. Not sure what it will cost you, but I know that they will scan film. It's probably cheapest at the time of processing, though, when you have the option of getting 3600 X 2400 scans of the film.
