keeping family photos online

At a family reunion two years ago I scanned some photos of our grandparents and put them up on a special flickr account so all the grandchildren could have copies as they wished. After the reunion this week I went to put up some more, but the flickr account is gone, presumably for inactivity.

Do any of the online galleries not delete photos for inactivity? Is there an easy way to put them on my own web server?

many hosting plans have free gallery software available to use for this purpose. Some of the tools are a little clunky, though.

Or, if you have a dropbox account, just drop the photos in the Photos folder (and create subfolders if needed for different albums), and people will get a nice browsable gallery with access to all of the full res files for download. hard to beat, in my opinion, for ease of use with little fuss on either end.

Flickr doesn't delete photos unless there was a terms violation. What are you calling a "special" flickr account? Your pics will stay up there for as long as flickr goes on. If you had a Pro acct, it will revert to the Free account which will only show your last 200 photos. You should contact them.

Well, I went back and focused on logging in and sure enough, they are still there.

What I wanted was to set up a site that any of the grandchildren could add to, so I set up a flickr account in our late grandfather's name with a password we all would know. Maybe there's a better way to do a shared photo album.

If everybody has the login, they could upload whatever. Even from the flickr app on the phones. BUT, the free account only allows 200 photos of a certain size. For $24 dollars you get an unlimited Pro account. Flickr is kinda social so pics could be shared via Facebook and such and such.

I can't add to your knowledge but wanted to thank you for password protecting the photos. I find people posting pictures of me on facebook, and tagging me, all the time and I do not like it. Some people are very particular about their privacy so you get an A+ for consideration.

Wait, I will add something. With dropbox you can have shared folders which nobody but the people you share with can see. I have used that with my brother to exchange information. Not sure if it works on a "group" level but you could check if it interests you.

Remember, with Dropbox and their free account, you only get 2GB of storage. There are tricks to get more space, obviously, but a big pile of hi-res unedited photos will quickly eat up 2GB of storage.

that's very true. But...there are also other benefits/functions of dropbox that can be useful far beyond photo storage. And they come without the restrictions of flickr pro (albeit at 4x the cost per year). Just boils down to exactly what you're trying to do and which service would be easier for you and your family to use.

I went ahead and paid for additional storage via dropbox. I'm able to sync all my documents between my computers and I have full access to everything on my ios devices. I didn't know of any other service that was as integrated as that. Why Apple gave away a market that I'm now paying $60/yr for is beyond me.

$60? How did you get Dropbox storage for $60? All I see is an additional 100GB for $99.

Maybe it was a promotion, I don't know. I did it from inside the app.
