I had to see it twice. Took someone the second time just to have someone to talk about it with.
Beautiful old movie clips, nice story.

When encouraging people to see Hugo, I tell them that it's the best Steven Spielberg movie that Spielberg never made...it took Martin Scorcese to do it.

Just saw it last weekend. Didn't really do much for me, not sure why.

I think part of it is that you have to be as excited about the work of Georges Méliès as Scorcese is.

Scorcese is enthralled with the history of cinema. (I like the pioneering Méliès stuff, too.)

Do a search of Georges Méliès on YouTube and you can see a number of his films. I first saw some as a kid and then as a teen, so I think the guy was one of the big influences in creating movies. The rest of Hugo is about Scorcese's sense of 'wonderment' of Méliès' role.

Another member of the club here. Maybe I expected too much because of the hype, but it didn't do much for me, either. Nor for either of my sons (we didn't see it together, but came out with similar reactions). dunno smiley

I had no idea what it was about before watching, so I had no expectations. I just watched it and thought it was brilliant. Another triumph by Scorcese in bringing life to past entertainment greats.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I finally bought the 3D version!

I've wanted to see this, ever since it was released, because of the many reviews and comments about how this was the "best" example of 3D, so far.

I bought a Panasonic 3D television October a year ago, but I haven't watched that many 3D movies.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy 3D, but I don't particularly like animated movies and of the 3D movies that I'd like to see, few have been available for free on my Cox "On Demand."

I was excited to finally see "Hugo" 3D for twelve bucks! in Amazon's BF offerings. It arrived yesterday, but I've been too sick to enjoy it.

Maybe I'll feel up for it, later today?

I've got three pairs of "glasses," so if you're in the area and will bring the "hookers and booze" you're welcome to join me. Perhaps, popcorn would be a better choice?

I'll post my "review" after I watch it. popcorn smiley
