So... really now. You fill a 2 TB hard drive with all of your collected personal data from the last 15 years. And then one day it won't spin up.
Do you really send it off in the mail with all your data potentially available to god knows who?

2tb Segate NAS for $60

Wow, that's really good. Can it be connected some other way than wireless for initial filling?

Does anybody offer decent warranty periods anymore? Not too long ago 3-5 years was the standard. I know externals are usually 1 year, but bare drives were usually 3-5.

bare drives are often 1-2 years now; some are 3, few are 5.

last time i checked, Verbatim brand external drives have a 7 year warranty.

Yes. If that data is important enough to send to a data recover professional.

Better is to make sure you have a backup or two (especially with that much data) and then you can just scrap the 'dead' drive when it happens and replace, as necessary.

There are bad apples everywhere, but professional companies see so much of this stuff, the odds a person, that works in that sector, is scheming to use your data for identity theft (or however) is very, very miniscule it is not even worth thinking about.

Now if a person has something very illegal, and very easy to identify without needing to poke around too deep, then yes I'd probably advise (actually I wouldn't to that type of person) that person not to submit his/her drive to such a place - that will report these things, if discovered.

This is exactly the reason it is so much cheaper just to have another cheap drive handy to back up the first - BEFORE having to dump $3000 to DriveSavers®.

There is definitely a good reason for hiding files containing all the metrics for the latest inks, plates and paper composition for US money as well as your contact lists at Crane Paper that you get your striped blanks from. Even better to just use a RAID box to prevent ever having to ship that drive away for repair!

The last thing you need is some punk from DriveSavers® seeing a photo of you with all your guns and freshly printed money in stacks, those metrics/data files, putting 2+2 together, and then calling the Secret Service!!

It’s much better if they try to blackmail you, and then you get a chance to learn how to do your own hits, proper burial and use of lye to so disrupt cellular structure that DNA can’t be recovered to determine if what was buried was a mammal or not, let alone human!

The great thing is, you can get the Lynda’s Guide (6 DVDs) to doing it right,
and you can use your latest cash prints to buy it!

Also - just as a side note, use of the Memory Foam Mattress Pad still doesn’t make this a very comfortable bed. But I only had room for one “cash sofa” - not two, because I also have to store the rotogravure, multiple buckets of optical variable inks (color shifting ink), solvents, pigments and the UV curing conveyor. (You wouldn’t believe the mess to print up $40,000,000. Sometimes you ask yourself after a few hours if it’s worth the time… ).

Turns out - it is. devil smiley
.

.
Don’t ask me about the color coded rubber bands. I could tell you, but… well, you know the rest.

.
Machinist Custom-Made silencers are awesome!

Just remember - you can prevent all that hassle with one of these!

Decent price on the 4T drive.

I paid nearly that earlier this year for a 2T drive.

Thanks for the link, decay!

Not crazy about Seagate drives, failed me in the past.

All of my failed HDs have been Seagates.

Who's making Deskstars these days? Is it Seagate that acquired them? I as always a Hitachi guy, never had a problem. They're gone, but I don't know if any stock made by them is still available.

Even if it was, I wouldn't know how to find that out, at least in advance of purchasing.

It appears that the 4T drive is a Hitachi (HSGT) but are they still being made by the same people with the same "standards"?

Every time somebody buys a company there are all the "there goes the neighborhood" comments. I just don't know how accurate that sentiment is.

i've had to replace 2 out of 4 HSGT 2TB hard drives this year; they were under warranty and used in Thermaltake RAID docks.

they do feel very hot to the touch.

Not crazy about Seagate drives, failed me in the past.

Using WD's, so far so good.

Just replaced two 3TB WD externals in the past month being used as Time Machine drives. One failed diagnostics and wouldn't mount, the other wouldn't turn on (probably a bad "soft" power switch; hate those switches). Both times they tried to replace FW800 drives with cheaper USB 3.0 drives and I had to call and have them ship me FW800 drives.

Also on my third replacement of a WD portable drive. Granted the second two were somewhat my fault because I tried to update the built-in WD software/firmware and it bricked the drive. But come on, that shouldn't happen in the first place. Now I'm just afraid and won't update the stupid WD software on any of them. At least with the portable drive, I went from a 500GB with 1 FW800 port -> 640GB (twice) -> 1TB with two FW800 ports, so I got some automatic upgrades.

So, basically, everyone has a story about how some drive manufacturer has failed them in the past. If you listened to them all, you wouldn't buy anything. So I just buy what's cheap and convenient, or has the features/warranty I need.
