Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday—lots of great singers in both the jazz and classical genres. I don't feel I need to have one "favorite."

You have to narrow it down by musical genre (at least). Maria Callas? Ella Fitzgerald? Dolly Parton? All wonderful, but very different.

I second Ella and Aretha, and add Marian Anderson, Barbara Cook, Kiri te Kanawa, Betty Buckley, Diana Krall and Cat Russell. I think you need to categorize. The OP seems to be asking for a pop star and from that list I would pick Aretha. Diana Ross was awfully good before her brain got addled.

Kinda embarrassing, but I second the earlier mention of Karen Carpenter. Obviously a lot of pop-y dreck, but for pure vocal quality, especially in that lower range, I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone match her.

Kind of a pity- one wonders what she might have evolved to if she had survived.

Long ago back in college I got to cater a concert for Aretha Franklin. After we were all done, we snuck in to the balcony and watched the show. She really was and is an amazing singer.

Aretha
Bonnie Raitt
Janis Joplin
Billie Holiday
Joni Mitchell
Emmylou Harris
Early Dianna Ross

I could go on. There are some more current voices out there that may make my list one day, but their catalogs need time to grow first.

Bonnie Raitt,

Silky smooth with a tinge of whisky, all while playing the slide.

Gives me chills.

Christine McVie,

Mature and understated in a band with Stevie Nicks in the forefront.

Rickie Lee Jones,

Girlish, whimsical yet deep and thoughtful.

Another impossible poll and another list that mostly misses the mark. I can think of a whole bunch. High on the list (that I don't think have been mentioned yet) would be:

Bessie Smith
Patsy Kline
Dusty Springfield
Loretta Lynn
Joni Mitchell
Janis Joplin
Krissy Hines

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Anyway, the answer to the question is

ELLA FITZGERALD.

Though I'm not sure she really fits in the category, I have always thought Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) had an incredible voice and never got the recognition that she deserved. She was very good at spanning from the understated intimate parts of a song to the huge powerful verses. I've seen her many times and have always been blown away. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but boy she works for me.

The thread title is for who is the BEST singer and then the poll is for FAVORITE singer. How can Kelly Clarkson be a choice for BEST SINGER and not Ella Fitzgerald?

I was appalled that Billie Holiday wasn't included on the list!

Good voices, bad voices, none had the "soul" of Lady Day.

Others could sing pretty songs, but She could rip your heart out one moment and have you grinning the next.

Absolutely one of a kind.

Just to get her name in there... Judy Garland.

(But I'd also go with Ella Fitzgerald as my ultimate pick)

Of all time? That list isn't anywhere close to encompassing all of time. How about Rosa Ponselle or Renata Tebaldi or Kirsten Flagstad? Or Jenny Lind or Lilly Langtree? Or Ooola the cavewoman?

She's my pick: Outstanding set of pipes and she projected serious emotional investment in the songs she sang. You got the feeling she was really living the songs as she sang them.

You shouldn't be embarrassed by that, she's who came to my mind too... not because she was the "best", but simply because she had an unmistakeable voice and an incredible range, that simply haven't been matched since. I dare you to watch this and not shed a tear: [www.youtube.com]

Another one that should have made the list: Amy Lee... nice set of pipes on that girl: [www.youtube.com]
