App Store and updates?

Two questions regarding the App Store and third party apps.

1. I own several apps which can now be purchased through Apple's App Store, but I purchased them before there was an App Store. Is there any procedure or program for linking them so that Software Update recognizes them and will update them?

2. If an app which was purchased from the App Store notifies me itself that there is an update available, and I allow it to update itself, will that circumvent the App Stores update process, and cause the App Store to no longer recognize the app as having been acquired through it?

1. No.

2. If it was purchased through the App Store then it can only be updated through the App Store. It won't alert you to updates. The App Store will alert you to updates. And you'll have to sign into the App Store to download those updates.

This is one reason why many popular app developers do not make apps for the App Store. It's a PITA.

More than ever before this is the Apple way.

Say what you will about the App Store, but it has saved me money on many of the apps I use with three Macs in the house.

Why is this a PITA? If they agreed to sell the App via App Store, why not let people update via App Store? It saves them bandwidth and hassle.

I'm confused by your second point. It won't alert you but it will alert you?

It's anything but a PITA. Select Software Update from the Apple Menu and it will automatically check both system software and any applications you've purchased via the App Store. One click is all it takes to update all software that has outstanding updates..

It couldn't be simpler or more efficient.

The app itself won't alert you, but the App store will alert you.

It's a PITA for me because my apps have been purchased under 3 accounts. I have to log out and log in again for each update.

And it's a PITA for my sister whose 2 kids share her computer and have separate App Store accounts to keep their gift card balances separate.

(Apple doesn't allow any sort of amalgamation or transfer between App Store accounts.)

And it's a PITA for developers because they're stuck with Apple's update and DRM mechanisms and when that fails they get all the complaints with none of the ability to fix it. (Plus, it requires a full download of the app with every update --- no svelte delta updates -- so users often have to sit through loooooong downloads that they wouldn't have to endure outside of the App Store ecosystem. Developers get blamed for that, too.)
