I read a tip to open blister packs with a manual can opener. I haven't had the opportunity to try it.

Agreed, I bought a pair of electric scissors that needed a pair of electric scissors to get into the packaging. Grrrr ...

FWIW... I've learned how to open the damn things. Take a sharp knife and run it around 2/3 of the package inside the 'lip'. That creases and cuts enough of one side that I can pry it open. But it's still crazy difficult.

My least hated ? The 'Clamshell' packages that can be pulled apart by yanking on one end.

My amazing favorite packaging method ? Those cool origami-like structures made of die-cut cardboard that hold everything in perfect suspension during the shipping process, then come apart easily and are recyled.

Sorry, stupid eBay sellers. You don't just dup Legos in a box and half tape it up and except them all to make it.
Who doesn't have a few plastic grocery bags except where they're banned?

Disclaimer: I'm not saying all eBay sellers are sorry and stupid. My wife never packages anything like some of these morans.

Eldest blessing graduated with a Fine Art degree and started work in a cardboard box company. We did wonder a bit but once we saw the amazing designs she produced we realised the artistic merit. She would make bespoke one off card items for artists and display companies and her Christmas packaging was a joy in itself! All usually made from a single piece of card. I fortunately got many specifically made boxes for storage but unfortunately she has moved on to a different job.

cbelt,

Lazy packaging all the way. All of the other issues are minor in comparison because they don't result in damaged merchandise. I've returned several items to stores because they were either damaged in transit due ti insufficient protective packaging or because it was a fragile item that may not show immediate signs of damage but could show it at a later time due to being bounced around like a ping pong ball in a box.

There are doo-hickies you can buy that are made to open blister packs hey presto. Never tried one though.

Here's a Popular Science shoot out of various hickies and doos.

Lazy packing would be my pet peeve, if I experienced it more often. I got some very poorly packed stuff when I was more active on eBay. Perhaps the worst was a hard drive that the seller tossed naked (the drive—I don't know about the seller's state of dress or undress when he prepared the box) into a box of styrofoam peanuts, the wildly static-y kind. By the time the box reached me, the drive had settled to the bottom and had only the cardboard wall of the box to protect it. Amazingly, the drive survived. It was a tough-as-nails Seagate SCSI drive, made when drives were supposed to last a while.

I *was* going to choose dunnage beads as my personal choice, because the damn things always get loose. Back in the 90's I watched a mechanic remove a jet engine component from a crate filled with them, spilling about 5 cubic feet of dunnage beads all over the hangar, apron, and ultimately the taxiway and runway.

At Edwards Air Force Base.

Can you say "FOD" ? (Foreign Object Damage). I wonder if that idiot was responsible for a crash as a result.

Cbelt,

I have a feeling some of the issue I have with "lazy packaging" aren't so much due to laziness on the part of the individual packing the goods for shipment. It's due to poor training on the part of the company. They simply don't know that some items require more protective packaging then other items. Or, that manufacturers cartons which may be fine for moving a bunch of a given item on a pallet is woefully inadequate for use as a shipping container.

My wife and I purchased a bunch of china from Macys and while some we picked up at the store, other pieces came to us via UPS directly from the manufacturer. Did they put the pieces with the boxes in larger boxes filled with protective packaging? Nope. They took the cartons they use for normal pallet shipments, slapped a label on it and move it out. And, pieces were broken upon arrival. Surprise, surprise.

My company sells items that can be easily damaged in transit. To say I put a very strong emphasis on protective packaging during training sessions is an understatement. I think companies that ship goods could save a tremendous amount of time, money and general agita if they did the same.
