New Amazon Service Announced Today: AutoRip CD
Posted by: pinkoos
Date: January 10, 2013 08:55AM
[www.amazon.com]

Buy a CD, instantly get the MP3 version for free.

The CD has to be an AutoRip eligible CD. Looks like right now they have about 37,500 eligible CDs.

EDIT: Looks like AutoRip-eligible CDs bought since 1998 (or something like that) will automatically be added to your Cloud account as well.

EDIT: Just signed into my Cloud Player on the web and saw that 3 CDs I bought in the past were automatically added. Additionally, after having signed in, I got an email almost right away notifying me that 3 CDs were just added to my Cloud Player.

Wow. Added 105 songs...including the Dream Academy album I purchased in August of 2000.

Edit: Uhhhh! And the Charlotte Church cd I purchased for my mom in 2002. Delete.

I wonder if I purchase an LP if they'll add the MP3s for me... that'd be nice.

I'm really glad to see this. I'd be willing to switch all my music purchases over to Amazon for this... as long as the discs I want also get the digital versions.

If this is retroactive, I wonder if it applies to CDNOW purchases.

So Amazon's rips are only still 256 instead of 320. Let alone a lossless rip...

I suppose some people could buy the CD, get Amazon's rips, and then cancel the physical order before it ships...

Pinkoos,

What are the specs of the rip? I use:

96 kbps (mono)/192 kbps (stereo), normal stereo optimized for MMX/SSE, using mp.

(all as copied from iTunes Import settings)

These settings have served me well. I stick with it since my car likes MP3 CDs and I use them for long distance trips instead of a cable from my iphone to the stereo of the car.

Cool!

Edit: but the earliest AutoRip'd songs are from a Sept 2006 purchase so there may be more coming?

Cool perk. Clever idea to draw customers.

So Amazon's rips are only still 256 instead of 320. Let alone a lossless rip...

I figured that would be the case. I still use Apple Lossless and I only have iOS devices so AL is good for me. Getting the downloads while I wait for the CD would be nice.

I suppose some people could buy the CD, get Amazon's rips, and then cancel the physical order before it ships...

I haven't looked for fine print, but I think it would be easy for AMZ to charge the customer for the D/Ls unless they did a bunch of CDs and then cancelled the card. Or delay the downloads until the cancellation window is shut.

And if the customer refuses or returns the CD, AMZ could still charge for the D/Ls. There must be some sort of EULA or Fine Print for this service.

I agree. I haven't looked at the fine print either, but one would imagine Amazon has thought of such loopholes.

256 should be pretty decent for most people.

Ripping a CD takes about 3 minutes.

You're not counting the two days it takes to ship the CD from an Amazon warehouse.

It takes 2-3 days for my slide film to get processed.

Somehow I manage... ;)

The interesting thing is that the line is blurred when I can gift the shrink-wrapped CD to a friend (certain titles only, of course) and still retain the downloaded version for myself.

I'm not holding my breath, but getting a Kindle copy of a physical book doesn't seem so far off.
