tv marathon suggestions

So starting wednesday I'm on the couch for a week. I have my stack of reading material but I'm going to need some tv marathons to keep me occupied. I just got Farscape which I have not seen before, season 1. What else should I blast through?

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

I'm in the beginnings of my annual M*A*S*H series run on DVD. Per an earlier thread, I'm going to be watching the full run of BATTLESTAR: GALACTICA as soon as my blu-ray set comes in from Amazon UK.

Also worth watching as a series run; DOC MARTIN which has five full seasons.

Are you streaming (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) or buying/renting discs?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

If you're not opposed to a British soap opera, my recommendation is Downton Abbey. The UK versions of Seasons 1 and 2 are free on Amazon Prime. The season 3 finale aired in the US tonight and I believe the entire season is available OnDemand.

I was just laid up and off of work due to knee surgery for the past couple of weeks and I can recommend the short-lived series "Firefly", followed by the movie "Serenity". It's a shame that Fox killed the series, wife and I found it quite entertaining.

Oops! The "no laughing a lot" rule kind of invalidates my initial suggestions:

My Name Is Earl (4 seasons)

Reno 911 (5+/- seasons, the first three are the best)

However, a far less humorous but equally enjoyable selection might be:

The Outer Limits (The Original Series)

Am halfway through this myself and it is excellent. I've always thought Spacey was great and this was perfect for him. Give it a shot if its available to you.

If you like Elementary, I think you'll like Sherlock (the new bbc series) - there are only a handful of shows now, but the lead characters share similar habits.

Wow, ok I've got them stacked and racked and ready to go. Between Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon I was able to get most of the ones that caught my interest. Many shows in this list that I had not heard of before. Several that I have watched and forgotten about such as The Prisoner. I remember trying to watch the original series, with the big bouncing ball, and just couldn't do it. My dad loved it though. I couldn't find "If I Tell You, You'll Think I'm Crazy" anywhere though. Not even at imdb.

Thanks for the long list. I think I'm set for the duration! I've got today and most of tomorrow to get things in order around the house before the excitement begins. Have you ever wished you had a butler/assistant/whatever to help keep things rolling when you couldn't do it yourself? Missed market opportunity. Even a teenager could do it.

dave... will you have anyone visit you ? Visiting nurse, something like that ? Being alone and in pain sucks really badly. Being alone and at risk for post-op complications sucks even worse.

Keep in touch at least here (and share your personal information with someone) so we can get you help if you need it !

I second (or is it third or fourth) the extended editions of Lord of the Rings: won't make you laugh much, and will take up lots of your hours. And of course, revisiting all the Star Treks is never a bad idea.

Shows that haven't been suggested yet:

Dead Like Me for some black humor instead of "bust a gut" humor.

If you like cop shows (not a favorite of mine), the Canadian series Da Vinci's Inquest would make for good marathon viewing, as there are interesting story arcs that sometimes span seasons. Warning: each story isn't wrapped neatly by the end of the episode, and not all crimes are solved! There are at least 6 or 7 seasons, but I'm not sure they are all available. It's very well done, with a much grittier, more realistic tone than most.

I am married and have two daughters and a dog and a mother living across the street and in-laws about a mile away. I suspect I will have more visitors than I can handle. Good thing my door has a deadbolt. I can fake being asleep. :-)

Loved Dead Like Me. Probably one of my all time favorite shows along with Wonderfalls [www.imdb.com]

I finally got ahold of disc one of season one from Netflix on Saturday.

It's one of those very long wait discs.

Nice suggestion.

And amazingly, Canadians manage to remain polite even while they're doing 'grim and gritty'. smiling smiley

Any of AMC's original series would make for a good marathon:

Breaking Bad
The Walking Dead
Mad Men
The Killing
Hell on Wheels

Some great suggestions, but I want to second Doc Martin.

This is a great series on several levels. Warm, charming, clever, and with typical British dry wit. It has a Local Hero feel to it.

And Sherlock (the BBC version, as Zoid mentioned). Very well done.

Fringe is very good, too. Bones is another really good show.

Holy Crap, I may never leave my couch again! Awesome suggestions and may more additions to my queue.

Just got a call from surgeon (at 7:15pm?) with some minor details regarding surgery. A little later in the day than I thought on wednesday so I probably won't post all day wednesday. So you get a short break. Then comes the drugged posts.
