Back surgery
Posted by: davemchine

I'm home and in quite a bit of pain. Waiting for most recent dose of mess to kick in. Had three disc to repair and a surprise herniated disc plus a blocked nerve canal. So they did a lot more than planned. Instead of four hours it was about seven from start to end and a two hour drive after that. Just wanted to post that I was ok.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

stay ahead of the pain by taking next round sufficiently in advance of the current dose's wearing off to kill the pain before it manifests again. repeat as needed. catching up is a b!tch!

hope you're well soon. meanwhile, read as much calvin and hobbes as you can.

Speedy recovery!

I'm amazed that repairing 4 discs was outpatient. My wife had back surgery 7 years ago and she stayed in the hospital for three days. There is drainage and other things going on that they wanted to monitor, they also wanted to make it safe so that no infection would arise.

Probably a greater risk of infection staying in the hospital. Those places are a cesspool of germs.

The official term for the procedure is disk decompression but they use disc shaving as a way to describe it. They remove the portion of the disc that is pressing on the nerve to alleviate the pain. There were three discs that had this problem.

The surprise was the the herniated disc which caused the surgery to take much longer. I was having a great deal of difficulty walking but thought I was just being wimpy. Apparently my pain was justified though. Because I was out of it after surgery I am unclear on what he did for the herniated disc. All I know is "he had to really open me up." I believe he will be calling me today to explain.

I am also amazed it is out patient surgery. He said that because my discs are not "unstable" that I was safe to go home. There is a local doctor that will remove my drainage line on Friday. That is kind of gross. There are other gross hints too. I wasn't aware that peeing would feel like napalm after having that little tube. I also get to practice breathing with a simple plastic machine. Each time it brings up junk. I don't know what is about so ill have to ask when he calls today.

I do have my wife to help me and she is amazing. Hopefully I won't have to annoy her with petty requests for too long. I was prescribed oxycodone at what I consider a fairly high dose. I'm accepting it as a fact of life for now and I am also taking he necessary precautions to keep he digestive system running.

I hope that sharing this level of information will do several hints. One I hope people will continue to give me good advice and more questions for the doctor. This was a big deal for me and I really want it to work. Two I hope it gives information to others who are in pain. I didn't even know this was an option until recently. Knowledge is power as they say.

Medication is kckng back in so I'm going to sleep now. Thank you for all he support.

That sounds pretty rough, Dave. I sure hope your recovery progresses quickly and that all this results in the improvements that you so obviously needed.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
